My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Twinkie

Friendly at his core but understandably shy at first, Twinkie is still learning that the world can be safe and kind. Once he has a little time to settle in, his sweet and loving nature begins to shine through. With patience, a calm environment, and a soft place to land, Twinkie will blossom into a devoted companion for someone willing to let him move at his own pace.

Twinkie came to the Humane Society of Greater Dayton after being rescued from one of the most severe neglect cases our team has ever encountered. He was among 33 animals removed from a home in Dayton where conditions were heartbreaking—no running water, overwhelming filth, confined cages layered with waste, and extreme neglect. Many of the animals, including Twinkie, had been living in darkness and unsafe conditions for a long time.

Thanks to immediate medical attention and the compassion of our staff, Twinkie is now experiencing comfort, safety, and kindness—perhaps for the first time in his life. He’s ready for a fresh start and a loving home where he can continue to heal, feel secure, and be cherished. If you’re someone who believes in second chances and has the patience to let trust grow, Twinkie is ready to give you his heart.

More about this shelter

The Humane Society of Greater Dayton is proud to be a no-kill animal welfare agency. We are committed to finding great homes for great pets! As a 501(c)(3) nonproft, we receive no government funding and rely solely on donations from individuals, companies and grants to fund our programs and services. We are not affiliated with any other animal agency on a local, state or national level. Since 1902, our organization has been devoted to being a voice for the voiceless. Although we proudly find more than 2,000 animals forever homes every year, we are far more than an adoption center. We currently have a wide array of programs to support animals in our community. Through our high-volume spay and neuter clinic, we are able to help pet owners as well as battle cat overpopulation through Trap-Neuter-Return. Our humane society agents also work tirelessly to protect pets from cruel and neglectful circumstances through our Cruelty & Neglect Investigations Department. Through our Veterinary Hospital, we can provide top-quality access to veterinary care at a low cost to pet owners. In addition to our many programs, our organization is unique because we are the only agency in the community able to handle all types of animals. This includes cats and dogs but also rabbits, birds, farm animals, pocket pets and exotics. Our organization is committed to providing our community, our state and our region with support and care.
