Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Meet Firefly- a Resilient Senior Sweetheart 💛
This brave 10-year-old girl was rescued from Meridian Hill Park in Washington, DC, where she was found living under bushes and clearly struggling. She was bumping into things, seemed confused, and appeared to be blind. Given her condition, it’s believed she had been fairly recently abandoned; she was underweight but not unkempt, and she would not have been able to survive long outdoors without help.
She was taken to local vets where the doctors discovered she had extremely high blood pressure. This had caused both of her retinas to detach. With prompt treatment and blood-pressure medication, her retinas were able to re-attach (confirmed by the 4Paws pet ophthamologist), but she does have permanent vision damage and can now perceive light rather than full sight.
Despite everything she’s been through, she has shown herself to be a gentle and adaptable soul. While staying in her foster home, she was reported to be nervous at first—understandably—but she took her medications easily and showed fondness for a resident cat, suggesting she finds comfort in feline companionship.
Her interactions with people have been calm and reassuring. During transport to and from the ophthamologist, she was perfectly quiet and relaxed in her carrier. At the clinic, she was a bit nervous when removed from the carrier but remained cooperative and tolerant throughout her exam.
This sweet senior will do best in a calm, predictable home where furniture stays put, there are no stairs, and she can learn her surroundings at her own pace. She will never see clearly again, but she doesn’t need perfect vision to appreciate safety, kindness, and love. She needs a human who can commit to giving her blood pressure medicines daily mixed in her wet food (one in the AM, another in the PM). This medication to control her blood pressure is required for her remaining lifetime, otherwise she may also incur heart, kidney or brain damage. She also receives Viralys powder mixed in her wet food for immune system protection.
If you’re someone with a soft spot for senior cats and a quiet home to offer, she’s ready to leave her hard past behind and finally rest easy—this time, under a roof and with someone who won’t leave her. 🐾
Firefly is spayed, current on vaccinations, negative for FELV/FIV.

At the adoption fairs, if you meet a kitten or cat that you want to adopt, you will be asked to complete an application and contract and leave a check for the adoption fee ($120 for an adult or $145 for un-neutered kitten of which $50 is a deposit that is refunded after you provide 4Paws proof of sterilization). We ask that you pay the adoption fee up front at the fairs in order to “put a hold” on the cat until your application is processed. If your application is not approved, your check is returned to you.
Neither cats nor kittens are sent to their new homes on the day of the fair. It usually takes 4-5 days to process the application before the cat can go to his or her adoptive home. Pre-approval is an option, though. To accelerate the adoption process, you can fax a completed application and contract to us at 703-560-9795 a few days before the fair. Adoption Applications are available on this website.

Adoption fairs are held once or twice a month at various PETCO stores in Northern Virginia. The adoption fairs are usually held on Saturday’s from 1:00 to 5:00. Between 30 and 60 cats and kittens are shown for adoption at each fair—with the larger fairs generally occurring April through October.
While they are waiting to find permanent loving homes, our cats temporarily live in foster homes. The foster families bring the cats and kittens to the adoption fairs to be seen by potential adopters. Applicants have the opportunity to handle the cats and in some cases, meet the foster parents who can provide additional insight into a cat’s habits and personality.
