My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Cosmo is a 5-year-old, 51-lb neutered blue Chow who is currently decompressing in foster care after being rescued from the shelter. Right now, Cosmo is doing exactly what thoughtful, sensitive dogs do — taking his time. He's observing his surroundings, settling into routine, and slowly letting his personality shine through. With each day, he shows more confidence and curiosity, revealing a dog with strong instincts, intelligence, and quiet presence.

Cosmo finds comfort in toys and often self-soothes with squeaky noises. He gravitates toward calm, structured energy and appreciates an environment that feels predictable. Each morning, he does a full "perimeter check" inside and outside, making it clear that being aware of his surroundings — and protecting his space — comes naturally to him.

Big Cosmo energy:
- Loves toys and squeaky sounds
- Appreciates calm, respectful dog companions
- Natural guard-dog instincts
- Thrives with structure and confident leadership

Cosmo has done well around other dogs when energy stays mellow, though overly energetic play can make him anxious. He may do best with a laid-back canine companion or as an only dog in the right home. Cosmo has a strong prey drive and is not compatible with cats...We're also unsure about small dogs at this time.

**Cosmo is being fostered in Houston, Texas. Paid transport can be arranged. Transport costs range from $200-400.**

More about this rescue

Houston Chow Chow Connection is a collaborative of dog lovers and rescuers that dedicate their time, efforts and talents toward helping rescue Chow Chows in need. We are an entirely volunteer-driven 501(c)(3) organization with no administrative costs.

Our rescue traces its origin back several years to the work of Dianne Watson. Dianne dedicated much of her young life to saving homeless Chows in North and West Texas. In her memory, Houston Chow Chow Connection continues her passion of uniting Chow Chows with perfect forever families.

HCCC began rescuing in 2013 and re-homed over 400 dogs since inception, including over 125 in 2017! Our dogs found homes on the East and West coasts of the U.S. and have traveled north and south! As we continue to rescue and re-home more and more Chows, our costs grow. As you may know, rescuing animals takes money. Not only is there the typical care and upkeep (including food and general veterinary care), some of our rescues need specialized treatments.

At HCCC we don’t pick and choose the dogs we rescue – they pick us. While the majority of our rescues are healthy, we never turn our backs on the homeless, Chows with physical issues, or disabilities. Some of our incoming babies have suffered long-term and extensive neglect. New HCCC dogs may require spay/neuter, shaving due to extensive matting, entropion and/or hip replacement surgeries, treatment of skin problems and a variety of other issues.
