My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you!

Joey is an adorable, sweet little 8 year old charcoal Shih Tzu who weighs 8 pounds. Now you would think that a pup that small would be timid and shy. Not Joey, he has a big personality in that little body. He is quite sure he is the center of the world and is very vocal about it when things are not to his expectations. He absolutely expects to sleep in the bed with you, or no one will be sleeping. He loves his foster mom’s bed and often wants to take an afternoon nap there.

While Joey is friendly and good with other dogs, he’d do best as an only dog in a quiet household where he can be the center of attention. Joey has separation anxiety, and he is used to someone being with him most of the time. His foster family is working with him to overcome some undesirable personality traits when he gets jealous of another dog and he is not the center of attention, or when he’s left alone. His adoptive family must to understand his insecurity and will need to continue working with him.

Joey came from a loving, quiet home where his owner passed away. He loves to be held, and he wants to be on you or near all of the time. He is potty trained but may try to mark when transitioning to his new home. He does best if there is someone home to let him out frequently and take him for a walk when it’s not too cold.

Joey’s requirements:

- A quiet, adults only loving home that is similar to what he previously had and where he will feel most secure. They must be home most of the day.

- A fenced yard is nice but Joey really prefers a walk with you.

- A warm spot on your lap, next to you or in bed. His comfort is priority and expect no privacy, Joey has a strict open door policy.

- Live within 30 miles of Shoreview, Minnesota.

- Attend the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held each year in September.

Joey is neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped, and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. His adoption fee is $320.00 plus $28.88 sales tax for a total of $348.88.

To meet Joey, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

The first part of the adoption process is to submit an APPLICATION FOR ADOPTION online at www.shihtzurescuemn.org.

Once you have completed and submitted the application, it will be reviewed by an application committee who will decide if it is an appropriate application for one of our Shih Tzus or for a particular dog in which you are interested.

The application gives us an idea of your living situation, your family, your lifestyle, and what you are really looking for in a companion. As everyone knows, the requirements and expectations for dogs all vary, and like humans, each one has its own character and personality. With regards to dogs, some are mellow and just need a place where they can be a companion to people and relax and live out their lives. Others are more active or like the companionship of another dog. But they all need to be in homes where they are understood and loved unconditionally.

After reviewing the adoption application, an adoption coordinator will call for a phone interview to chat further about the dog and you. Upon completion of the phone interview we check your references to make sure that you are, in fact, who you represent yourself to be as both a person and prospective dog parent.

The next step is to verify your living situation. Once again, all dogs have different requirements, an example being that some dogs really need to go to homes where a fenced yard is available, whereas others are fine without a fenced yard. We also need to make sure that you are the owner of the home that you reside in, and if you are not, then we need to get consent from your landlord that the dog you are looking to adopt will be allowed in your home.

Finally, we will do a visit to your home, where all family members must be present, and you will get to meet the dog you are considering. Hopefully the visit will tell us that this is the match we hope it will be! At that point, if it is true love, then you may welcome your fantastic new Shih Tzu into your home for the beginning of what we are certain will be a wonderful, loving forever relationship. Please understand that it is the decision of the foster parent as to whether the family, home and dog are an appropriate match.

We require that you sign our adoption agreement and pay the adoption fee for the dog. All dogs adopted from us are fully vetted (vaccinated, heartworm tested, dewormed (if necessary), and spayed/neutered). The adoption fee is based on the age of the dog and ranges from $100 to $400.

More about this rescue

Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota (STRMN) is an all volunteer organization with a mission to Rescue, Rehabilitate, and Re-Home Shih Tzus and Shih Tzu mixes who are in need of loving homes. We believe every dog should have a second chance, and should be treated as a living creature with respect, dignity and compassion. While our volunteers are located in Minnesota, we are committed to rescuing Shih Tzus from other states as well. As long as we have an available foster home, we will rescue and care for another Shih Tzu. STRMN is a 501c3 charitable, non profit organization. All donations to STRMN are tax deductable and 100% of donations go toward the care and comfort of our rescued dogs.
