My name is Gemini. I am a young spayed female mixed breed weighing between 30 and 40 pounds. As you probably noticed, I am a tripod. Before I came to Rezdawg, I was a stray dog in New Mexico. My vet suspects I was hit by a car when I was very young, shattering my femur and part of my pelvis. Unfortunately, due to the extensive damage, the only option was to amputate. When I had all 4 legs, I didn't use my injured one much anyway so it's just a weight off my shoulders (or hip if you will). I adapted quickly, opting to go upstairs to my favorite dog bed, unassisted, the first night home after surgery. My lack of leg does not impact me in any way currently. I may not be the best fit for someone looking for a marathon running buddy, but I enjoy going on walks around the neighborhood and I navigate both flights of stairs at my fosters house well. Enough about my physical looks, lets get down to the important stuff!
I enjoy the company of others. I like playing with other dogs. Big dogs, small dogs, hairy dogs. You name it? I like it. I would flourish in a home with another confident dog to show me the ropes of this new, kind world. Cats? Interesting, but not worth my time and effort. I've tried to introduce myself to a few cats. I walk up, they hiss and swat at me (rude!) and I leave. Kids? Unsure. I haven't met too many tiny humans. Small humans can often be unpredictable and loud which may be hard for me, but I am young and with proper guidance for both me and my new small human, we would likely become friends. Adult humans? Excellent! I haven't met and adult human I don't like, but I have a soft spot for MY people, often opting to be with my humans after a quick hello to new people.
I am crate trained. I willingly go into my crate at my fosters house now, but I used to yodel for the first five to ten minutes. That behaviour may return in my new home while I get adapted to my surroundings. My foster has also successfully left me free roam in the home without issue once I was accustomed to my new home.
I am potty trained in my fosters house for the most part. I will go to the door to let you know I need to go out, but if you're not quick, I may choose somewhere else. I likely would do well with a doggy door, or maybe a door bell, so my signals aren't missed.
I like to explore. When I get to new places, I do like to walk the perimeter of my domain. I may leave to go on my own adventures, so a secured backyard is a must. I am by no means an escape artist (I have not tried to climb a fence or dig under, but I have not been left unsupervised outside for any period of time).
I do have some... let's call them quirks.
I was a injured stray trying to stay alive, so I lack house manners and sometimes I get unsure in new places. I would greatly benefit from group training classes to help me be on my best behaviour and to learn the world is a great place with my trusted humans by my side. I am full of enthusiasm. Despite having 3 legs, I like to jump and pull on walks. . I'm working on it. But its just so hard to contain this enthusiasm for life! There's just so much to see and do!
I can get car sick. When I was first brought home, I would drool all over the car (crated or riding free), sometimes vomiting if I'd eaten too close to the car ride. No fun for me or my human. When I go on car rides weekly, my car sickness all but disappears. Maybe a little drool, but nothing a baby wipe can't handle. However, if I go long stretches of time without a car ride, the motion sickness returns with a vengeance. No matter the time in the car, without consistency, I will exhibit motion sickness symptoms.
I like to talk. I'm not what my foster would describe as a demand or nuisance barker, but I do have quite a few opinions that I enjoy expressing freely. I often bark when I play with other dogs or my humans. I will alert you to ongoings in the neighbors yard and I enjoy yawning loudly, announcing that I am awake and would like attention. I may not be the best fit for an apartment with my talkative ways, but that is open to negotiation.
I can be a picky eater. I came in underweight, but I have a picky palate. I may have been a stray, by my palate is that of a high born royal It I had my way, I would prefer to eat canned or raw food all day! Unfortunately, my foster says I have to learn to eat kibble like most dogs, so I'm eating Firstmate kibble which I've deemed edible. Barely.
When I do find something I like, I don't really like to share. I display resource guarding of my prized things, such as my favorite bed, chews, and toys with other dogs. My resource guarding looks like growling, showing teeth, and sometimes snapping to tell other dogs to back off if they don't listen to my earlier warnings. While I have never picked a fight, this behaviour leaves a lot of room for improvement and could lead to problems without further guidance and human input. I have never shown resource guarding towards humans, just towards other animals.
I am a young dog with so much to learn and so much love to give! If I sound like a good fit for you or you'd like to meet me, please fill out an adoption application through RezDawg and they will put you in touch with my foster to arrange a meet and greet!
