Vida is a striking, soulful senior German Shepherd who is ready for a fresh start with someone who truly understands her. At approx. 6 years old, she carries herself with the quiet dignity of a dog who has seen a lot of life and is now looking for stability, comfort, and a person she can call her own. She is not a dog who gives her trust instantly, but when she does, it is deep, loyal, and incredibly meaningful. There are so many wonderful things about Vida. She is fully housetrained, crate trained, and has a solid obedience foundation. She knows sit, stay, down, come, and leave it, and she clearly takes pride in working with her person. She travels well in the car and has made noticeable progress since coming into foster care, showing that she is capable of growth when given time and consistency. Like many German Shepherds, she is intelligent, observant, and deeply bonded to the people she trusts. Her foster family has seen that while she may initially gravitate more toward men, she is absolutely capable of forming strong, affectionate bonds with women as well, once she feels safe. Vida is currently on daily medication that will need to be continued by her future family. She received Gabapentin and Onsior to prevent pain/discomfort from her arthritis and she is also on anti-anxiety medication (Fluoxetine). A 30 day supply of all of her medications will be sent with her into an adoptive home and an adopter will need to be vigilant about veterinary care and continuing these prescriptions. Vida prefers having her people to herself and thrives best when she does not have to share space, attention, or resources with other pets, so she would be best suited to a home where she is the only pet. Due to her sensitivities and need for a calm, predictable environment, Vida would do best in an adult-only home without children. She is also naturally protective of her space and can be wary of strangers in her home, which is very true to her breed. The ideal home for Vida is one with an experienced dog owner (ideally someone familiar with German Shepherds) and someone who is comfortable working on reactivity through trust-building, routine, and continued training. A person or couple who values loyalty over instant affection and who finds joy in earning a dogs trust will truly appreciate who Vida is. Vida is not looking for just any home. She is looking for the right one. In return, she offers steady companionship, intelligence, devotion, and the kind of bond that only comes from patience and understanding. For the right person, Vida will be a deeply rewarding companion and a loyal presence. Our adoption fees cover all up to date veterinary needs, including but not limited to: full veterinary examination, age appropriate vaccinations, fecal test and parasite prevention, wellness bloodwork, spay or neuter, and microchip. All dogs will be started on a 6 week trial of pet insurance after adoption. Local adopters can take advantage of 50% off a training course at Ruff Haus in Barrie (www.ruffhaus.ca) and all adopters will also be signed up for Petcademy to offer 30 days of free text-based behavioural support. Please visit our website www.preciouspawsrescue.ca to submit an adoption application.

Before inquiring about a specific dog for adoption, please ensure you have read their complete bio. We try to provide a complete description of each dog’s preferences in their write up including whether they are good with children and/or other pets. Adoption fees for each dog are also listed in their bio. If you still have questions about a dog you’re interested in please send us a message and one of our volunteers will respond as soon as possible.
The first step if you are interested in adopting one of our available dogs is to complete the following Adoption Application. Once your application is received one of our volunteers will review it and then get in touch with you to schedule a time for an interview. When possible, we request a Skype or Facetime interview with you, so that we can complete your “phone interview” and “home visit” all at once. If these applications are not available to you we will schedule your phone interview first and, following that, we will schedule a home visit where a volunteer visits to meet all family members and see where the dog would be living.
Our focus is on making the best match, not only for our rescue dogs, but also for our adoptive families. We want our adoptions to be successful for all involved so please understand that our adoption process is in place to ensure this happens.

Precious Paws Rescue was founded in December 2006 and is based in Simcoe County, Ontario. We do not operate a shelter facility; all of the dogs that we accept into rescue are fostered with volunteers in this area. Precious Paws was officially incorporated as a non-profit in Ontario in 2010 and registered as a charitable organization in 2019. We are, and always have been, 100% volunteer-run.
We receive daily requests for rescue help from animal shelters and also from owners who are no longer able to care for their dogs. Precious Paws accepts all breeds, all sizes and all ages, we are limited only by the foster spaces we have available and by monetary funds. Foster homes, volunteers and donations are always greatly appreciated so be sure to click over to our “How You Can Help” pages to see how you can get involved.
Precious Paws Rescue ensures that each and every dog we rescue has full veterinary care provided prior to adoption. This includes (but is not limited to) full age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal test and deworming, wellness bloodwork and heartworm test, spay/neuter and microchip. We believe that no dog should be adopted out unaltered (unless there is a medical reason prohibiting this) so we practice pediatric spaying and neutering for all puppies that enter our rescue as well. Often the dogs we rescue require additional veterinary treatments to prepare them for adoption and most dogs that we take in end up costing the rescue much more than the adoption fee recovers. We lose an average of $600 on each and every dog that we rescue. For this reason we host fundraisers and donation drives throughout the year so that we are able to continue being available for the dogs who need us most.
In 2015 we started “Loved At Home” (formerly “Boo’s Fund”) – a fund that endeavors to keep more families together when medical emergencies arise with beloved pets. Sometimes good pet owners fall on hard times and are unable to afford an injury or acute illness with a pet. Most often those owners are forced to euthanize their companion or surrender them to a shelter or rescue to ensure they receive the care they need. Precious Paws would prefer to keep well cared for dogs out of the shelter/rescue “system” and we created Loved At Home to do just that. When funds are available, we will provide pet owners with the money needed to assist with emergency veterinary care, so that dogs don’t lose the family they love and so that there are fewer dogs in need of shelter/rescue assistance. Loved At Home also supports families by providing food donations and temporary foster homes when the situation calls for it.
Precious Paws Rescue has grown a great deal from the one foster/volunteer that we started out with. Because of dedicated volunteers, generous supporters and committed adopters, we have been fortunate enough to directly change the lives of many, many dogs since we started. Our hope is to continue to provide relief to the dogs that need us most for many years to come.
Our Mission Statement
To improve the quality of life for animals in need through foster care and adoption programs, comprehensive veterinary care, behavioural assessments and training, and public education.
