Rescue Story
Iruri was rescued from a dog meat slaughterhouse in September 2024. Despite her difficult beginning, she has shown a gentle heart and a strong desire to connect with people.
Personality & Human Socialization
Iruri may look confident at first, but she is naturally sensitive and a little timid, especially in new environments. Once she feels safe, her affectionate side shines—she truly loves people and craves attention and reassurance.
She enjoys gentle interaction from adults and children under 13, is comfortable being picked up (arms under the belly), and when relaxed and happy, she may even show her belly to people she has just met.
Dog Socialization
Iruri previously experienced some tension with other dogs in a crowded foster setting, likely due to insecurity and her strong need for affection. Since then, she has received additional training focused on manners and appropriate dog-to-dog interactions.
She will greet unfamiliar dogs politely but usually does not engage in prolonged play. She may briefly attempt to play when excited, then quickly lose interest. She does best with calm, well-mannered dogs who read social cues well. Very high-energy dogs can be overwhelming for her.
Careful introductions are recommended with unfamiliar dogs, as she may respond if provoked. On walks, she generally shows little interest in passing dogs.
Energy Level
Iruri has a moderate energy level. She enjoys walks and outdoor time, but once her activity needs are met, she settles easily and relaxes quietly at home.
Walks & Leash Manners
Iruri becomes excited when doing things with her person and tends to walk at a quick pace, sometimes pulling on leash. Overall, she follows her handler well.
She can be sensitive to unfamiliar sights or sudden stimuli. For example, she once barked defensively at an elderly person using a cane and hid behind her handler. She has been working on desensitization using positive reinforcement and food rewards.
Other Behaviors
• Does not guard food from people
• May growl if another dog approaches while she is eating
• Can take treats calmly alongside other dogs
• Afraid of getting into cars and needs to be carried in
• Experiences mild motion sickness
• Potty routine: usually eliminates right after meals during yard time or walks; otherwise uses pee pads indoors
