Their adoption process

Great matches are our goal! We go through an application process, phone interview, and a home visit to ensure our adoptable animals and their prospective new families are the right fit for each other.

Adoption steps

  1. Submit Application
  2. Interview
    1. We chat with prospective adopters via phone about the individual animals and their households.
  3. Meet the Pet
    1. We primarily adopt out to the East Coast. If the adopter is local, we arrange a meeting. If not local, we will transport.
  4. Home Check
    1. We complete home checks prior to adoption.

Our adoptable animals are in foster homes awaiting adoption.

More about this shelter

PETA’s Community Animal Project (CAP) has improved the lives of thousands of animals in Virginia and North Carolina. CAP rescues local animals directly. We go into the very poorest of neighborhoods to deliver food, doghouses, and bedding to neglected animals who have never known a kind word or touch. Since the program’s inception in 2001, PETA’s mobile clinics have spayed or neutered more than 224,200 companion animals, preventing the births and inevitable suffering of hundreds of thousands of unwanted dogs and cats in Virginia and North Carolina, all through low-cost or free sterilization surgeries. Our adoptable animals often come from in-field surrenders.
