My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Some dogs are espresso shots. I’m more like the warm mug you keep refilling because you didn’t realize how much you needed me until I was already in your hands.

I’m the kind of guy who sits in the back of the class, actually doing the assignment, mentally noting that half of you are chewing on pencils for no reason. I don’t need to be the loudest or the flashiest—never have. I observe. I assess. I decide who’s worth my time… and once you make the cut, congratulations—you get my goofy, sweet, slightly ridiculous inner circle version. I love playing with my close friends, and when I’m comfortable, I’ll surprise you with my zoomies, my silly moments, and my very serious opinions about cuddle positioning. So if you’re looking for a flashy show-off who throws himself at everyone he meets, I’m probably not your guy. But if you want the quiet heartthrob who sneaks up on you and then never really leaves your side? Yeah. That’s me. James....

Before we dive too far in, I should probably start with the part where I survived my independent outdoor survival era—because yes, that was a thing. I’m a 4–5 month old, ~30 lb Pyr/Border Collie mix, and before I landed here, my siblings and I were abandoned and doing our best “tiny rugged adventurer” impression. Thankfully, a very kind human made sure we were fed and safe-ish, even though we were living outside. It wasn’t glamorous, but honestly, up until then...it was the only life we had ever known. Right as the Arctic weather decided to roll in with its aggressive snow and “absolutely not” temperatures, Pyr Paws swooped in like the heroes they are and scooped us up just in time. Honestly? Excellent timing. I look great in snow, but I strongly prefer observing it from indoors with snacks.

I get along with other dogs just fine—I’m just not here to wrestle every stranger I meet like it’s a middle school gym class. I respect personal space. I appreciate dogs who do the same. If we’re friends? Great, I’ll play. If we’re not? Also great, I’ll simply coexist like a well-adjusted adult. I have not yet been formally introduced to any feline roommates, so my official stance is “to be determined.” I suspect I would approach the situation thoughtfully, with mild curiosity and zero chaos—because that’s my brand—but until science runs the experiment, we simply cannot say. I have been around a 16-year-old human, and I would like the record to show that it went very well. She provided excellent pets, solid companionship, and understood that I am not a jungle gym. In return, I offered calm presence and occasional playful sidekick energy. A mutually respectful arrangement, really. If this is what “teenagers” are like, I approve.

On a scale of 1 to 10, my energy level is a very intentional 5. I can play. I can engage. I can absolutely show up when it’s time to have fun. But I can also chill. Observe. Lounge dramatically. Recharge. Am I an adventure-seeker or a homebody? At this time, I am a young, indecisive puppy with mixed feelings. Some days I’m like, yes, let’s explore the world, see the sights, sniff everything.
Other days I’m like, counterpoint: the couch exists. I’m still figuring out who I am and what my brand is, but early signs point to “moderate adventure, followed by a nap.” I’m best described as gentle, a little shy, and very much a sweetheart in progress. I like to take my time getting comfortable. I hang back, watch the room, and quietly decide that yes, this seems safe… and also you seem nice. With other puppies, though, I loosen up faster and enjoy a good play session once I’m feeling settled. When it comes to people, I might not run up and demand attention right away, but once I know you? Oh, I love a good pet. I just need a minute to warm up first. I may be a slow start, but I promise I’m very worth the wait—and I come with a surprisingly goofy side once I trust you. As for housing requirements: I would very much like a securely fenced yard. Somewhere I can safely roam, sniff, and stare into the distance like a dog in an indie film. Could I survive without one? Sure. Would I reach my full potential without it? Debatable. Basically—give me toys, a yard, and a family who understands that I am a gentleman with zoomies, and we’ll all be very happy.

Before we go any further, I’d like to address something important: I am still young, which means puppy-proofing your home will be your responsibility, not a reflection of my character. I am learning how the world works, and sometimes the world leaves very interesting items within reach. That feels like a setup. I’ll also need you to commit to socialization and training so I can grow into the well-adjusted, emotionally stable adult everyone brags about. With consistency and patience, I’m going to shine.

And now, the part where you admit that you have fallen in love and take the next step in welcoming me home. Fill out the adoption application at https://www.pyrpawsandfluffytailsrescue.com/adoption-app so the nice rescue people can send it to my foster family and confirm that you are, in fact, prepared to be obsessed with me. Then come pick me up in Hutchinson, KS, which I assume is your way of proving you’re serious about this relationship.
