My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Gatie- This sweet girl is a village dog all the way from the island of St. Lucia! Fun fact: the village dogs in St. Lucia and the surrounding Caribbean islands are their own special breed called a Potcake! The name comes from a traditional dish of mixed peas and rice that, when cooked, develops a `cake` on the bottom of the pot that is commonly fed to the stray dogs. Because Potcakes are a form of village dog rather than a pedigree breed, they all tend to look a little different from one another, but have similar traits- some of which include a calm demeanor, resilience, intelligence, and fierce loyalty. At the SPCA Cincinnati, we have taken in many rescues from St. Lucia, and we`ve learned over time that they are very sweet dogs who bond hard with their trusted people.

Due to her long trip to get here and history as a stray dog, we do not know much about Gatie`s unique personality yet, but we are learning more as time goes on. If you have dogs at home or children, we highly recommend bringing them into the shelter for a meet and greet to make sure everyone will get along well before going home.

Gatie has come a long way, even braving the cold temperatures of Ohio, and is ready to settle down in a cozy home. If your home sounds like a perfect fit, come visit her at SPCA Cincinnati today!

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

We are offering adoptions at our shelter from 12 noon - 6 p.m. daily. Our dog and cat adoption areas are open for walk-throughs every day. We are dedicated to making our shelter a pleasant environment for the animals and our guests. Adoption fees waived (FREE) for animals 6+ years old! Find your furever friend today...

If you are interested in adopting, check out the available animals on this website by using the tabs to the left or by clicking here for up-to-date information on pets currently available for adoption.

Adopters must be at least 18 years of age, have a valid driver's license or government-issued ID, provide payment, and be required to sign the adoption contract.

We cannot finalize adoptions over the phone or online. This is a family decision; everyone in the adopter’s household is encouraged to meet the animal at the shelter. The actual adoption visit takes place in designated areas and typically lasts 10-15 minutes. During this time, you will be able to spend some quality time getting to know the animal and deciding if they are a match for your home. At the end of the visit, if it’s a match, GREAT! In keeping with the desire to limit visits, our expectations are that you are prepared to take the animal home the same day. If you are interested in adopting a dog, and you have a dog (or dogs) at home, they must successfully meet each other before completing the adoption.

More about this shelter

The SPCA Cincinnati is your Cincinnati Hometown Humane Society and has been for 150 years. When you ask, “Who is the SPCA near me?”, you’ll find us, with solutions for everything animal-related — from pet adoptions to vaccination clinics. We provide compassionate care for any animals that come to us, from food to medical care, exercise, enrichment, and love to get them ready to go to their new homes.

We are the pet placement experts locally and across our nation, making the SPCA Cincinnati the place to go for adopting cats and dogs, as well as small animals.

We do all we can to support people so that pet surrender is a last resort, such as providing pet food donations for those under financial strain and behavioral training. We partner with human social service agencies to keep pets in their current homes and to improve their quality of life. We value innovative educational techniques to keep pets and families together, enrich shelter life, promote the humane treatment of all animals, and prevent pet overpopulation.

Our work is made possible through the compassion and generosity of donors — caring friends like you.
