My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Willie is a 6 to 7 year old 30lb Red Heeler looking for a soft spot to land. 🌱

Long time followers may remember Willie. He was fostered with us for one year and found his special person 3 years ago when he was adopted and lovingly renamed Comet. He thrived in his adoptive home but is now needing to start over again after the death of his adopter. ❤️‍🩹

Willie was hit by a car and needed both of his back legs amputated before he originally came to OFR. He adjusted to the two legged life admirably. From this accident, he is also incontinent and needs to wear diapers inside. He does have a wheelchair for walks and longer play times outside, but prefers "scooting" on his two front legs as his primary mode of transportation.

Willie is overall a pretty independent guy. He has slowed down a bit and enjoys long naps 😴 under a bed or table. When he's feeling active, he loves chasing and chewing on balls 🎾, playing tug of war, basking in the sunshine ☀️, getting some good scratches, and shaking stuffed animals 🧸.

🏡 Like most herding breeds, Willie needs rules and structure in his home. He will need a strict decompression period when he moves, as he has been through so much recently and has been grieving the loss of his beloved owner. He is dog friendly with slow and controlled introductions. He has also lived with cats. He does need a home where there are no children under 13 years old.

We are looking for a long term foster or adopter commitment to Willie, someone who will help him overcome this new challenge life has thrown at him and adjust to a new normal. 💛

Additional adoption info

Each pet that is available for adoption is in a foster home for a minimum of 2 weeks after being rescued. This allows the animal to decompress and show their true personality, which in turn helps us find their best match.

Go meet their pets

Visit https://operationfreedomride.com/ and click "available pets" to see who is available for adoption.

Periodically we have adoption events around the greater Rochester, NY area; however, we largely rely on the application process to best match people/families with available pets and then set-up a meet and greet to make sure it's a great match before finalizing the adoption.
