One year old Lucas is the ferret that had the surgery to remove the 21 bladder stones. He is doing great! Two days after surgery, he was a new ferret with lots of energy and no more pain!
Tests show the stones were cysteine, which means it was genetics and not food related. It also means he may get stones again in his lifetime. To try and prevent the stones, he needs to have a more acidic urine. He's being put on a daily dose of potassium citrate to increase the acidity of the urine and he needs to be on a food that is lower in protein and does not contain peas or potatoes (Oxbow, Marshall's, Totally Ferret). The vet would like to see him every six months for a check up to be sure no stones are forming. Must go to home with another ferret.
