Meet Hugo, a sweet boy whose journey began when a staff member graciously picked him up and brought him safely to our shelter. While his start may have been uncertain, Hugo has shown nothing but gentleness and affection as he begins his path toward a forever home. From the moment you meet him, it’s clear he’s a tender soul who’s ready to give and receive love.
Hugo does well with other dogs and approaches new interactions with a calm, gentle demeanour. He isn’t loud or overly demanding, but once he feels comfortable, his sweet personality shines through naturally. He’s incredibly affectionate, loves belly rubs, and has a quiet charm that draws people in. With his soft light brown coat, big kind eyes, and playful moments sprinkled in, Hugo has a way of stealing hearts.
Hugo is looking for a home that can offer him consistency and plenty of affection. He would do well with a family who appreciates both his playful side and his love for calm companionship, whether that includes children or another dog. Hugo deserves a home where he can continue to build confidence and feel truly safe and loved, and in return, he’ll offer unwavering loyalty and a heart full of devotion.

When animals in our care at HelpAWS become eligible for adoption, interested parties can apply for a specific animal or for a litter in general by completing the online application,
located at www.helpaws.com/adopt/. Applications are processed by our Adoptions Team, and phone interviews are scheduled with each applicant. The interview is approximately one (1) hour long. After the interview, the Adoptions Team will request photos of the applicant’s home and yard and, if applicable, will conduct a veterinarian check (for applicants with other pets) and/or two (2) reference checks from the list provided by the applicant. Once all phone interviews have been completed and photos reviewed, the Adoptions Team will either approve or deny the applicant. Approvals will be matched with a specific animal based on their lifestyle and the animal’s personality/needs and will be informed via a group chat on Facebook Messenger. The applicant will then receive a follow up email with the relevant adoption details, including the Adoption Agreement, payment expectations and flight info. The animal will then be flown to his/her appropriate destination and transferred into the care of his/her new owner(s).

HelpAWS (Help Animal Welfare in Saint Lucia) is a 501c3 non-profit corporation founded by Canadian Charlene Troubetzkoy in 2014 after witnessing the severe overpopulation and neglected state of animals on the Eastern Caribbean island of Saint Lucia. HelpAWS is dedicated to enriching the quality of life for both people and animals through education, providing care to stray, abandoned, and/or injured animals, and controlling the animal overpopulation through spay and neuter. As of January 2021, HelpAWs has facilitated the successful adoptions of over 1,000 cats and dogs to Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and beyond.
