My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Benji is a 2-year-old young dog with a high energy level. He is looking for an active family who can provide him with plenty of daily exercise and mental stimulation. He loves to play, especially fetch and interactive games. Highly food-motivated, he learns well with treats!

With strangers, Benji can be nervous and fearful, especially around men. He needs slow introductions and a reassuring environment to help build his confidence.

He may pull strongly on leash when excited and experiences anxiety when left alone. Training is strongly recommended, particularly to work on his separation anxiety.

Benji can live with children who are respectful of his space and boundaries. He can be selective with other dogs, so any cohabitation would need to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Benji is a loving dog who, with the right guidance and support, will truly thrive.

More about this shelter

Founded in Montreal in 1869, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (now known simply as the Montreal SPCA) was the first animal-welfare organization in Canada. It is not known under whose influence the society was formed, but its history acknowledges assistance from animal-welfare societies in France, England and the United States. In its early years, the SPCA concentrated primarily on improving the treatment of work horses, which were used all across the island of Montreal. The SPCA later began working on additional issues, such as humane dog control, cock-fighting and the killing of wild birds. The SPCA has come a long way since its beginnings: today, it is the largest animal-protection organization in Quebec, speaking on behalf of animals wherever there is ignorance, cruelty, exploitation or neglect.
