My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Champagne
I learned that I am named after a celebratory drink that humans enjoy on happy occasions. What a providential name to give me! February 4 was a day I will celebrate forever, because that was when I was found as a stray cat and brought to the HSHC! I was someone’s pet at one time, as I was already spayed. However, like so many cats, once we are outside, away from our home, people seem to think we are gone forever. No one came looking for me. The medical staff examined me and pronounced me a healthy girl, aged somewhere between 2 and 3 years. I am nearly solid black except for some stray white hairs on my chest. Because I was pretty shy, on February 14, I was sent to live in a foster home to help me relax. I love my foster mom (FM). She understands what it is like to be in a new place with new people. For the first few days, I stayed in the little hut she put in my room. She offered her hand for me to sniff, and I never hissed or swatted. Even though I still haven’t shown much interest in the cat treats she’s offered, I polish off my meals and water. After a few days, I felt confident enough to explore my room while FM was quietly sitting there. I spent a long time rubbing my face and body against everything I could, leaving my scent behind. I even worked up the courage to rub against her legs! But on February 19, FM was absolutely delighted when I nuzzled my face against her hand and let her pet me. The next day, I repeatedly shoved my head against her hand for more pets. Then I lay down next to her and began making biscuits! I felt totally at ease and happy to be with her. She has learned some things about me in our short time together. Scratching the base of my tail really floats my boat, but I’m a bit unsure about head pets. So far, I’m not all that pumped about toys, but it’s still early. She’s decided to hold off on introducing me to new people and animals until she is sure of my confidence. I appreciate this very much. She is also pleased with how well I am using the litter box. FM is sure that I will make someone an adorable companion and thinks I’m making excellent progress. If you agree that I would make you happy, let the HSHC know you are interested so we can set up a meeting. 2-23-26

More about this shelter

With an open admission policy, a No-Kill philosophy, and more than 3,100 animals crossing our threshold each year, we have still maintained a 98% placement rate over the last 3 years.

This is an amazing feat for any organization…let alone one that takes in some of the most abused, injured and seriously ill animals imaginable.
