Peppa absolutely adores physical affection and seems happiest when she’s soaking up as much touch and attention as she can get. One important thing to know about Peppa is that she is deaf—but that certainly doesn’t slow her down! She appears to know some hand signals already and is very tuned in to body language. Because she can’t hear approaching footsteps or voices, sudden movements may startle her at times, so she’ll do best with adopters who are mindful about gently getting her attention.
We require that any young children in the home meet Peppa prior to adoption, and we strongly recommend that all household members come in to spend time with her to ensure everyone feels comfortable. Since Peppa relies on visual cues, she may not pick up on verbal corrections or signals from other dogs. For that reason, we recommend a dog-to-dog interaction at the shelter to help gauge communication and compatibility. With slow, gradual introductions, Peppa may be able to live with another dog.
A deaf dog can live the same full, happy life as a hearing dog—she’ll simply need a family willing to adjust their communication style. Continued training, especially with a professional trainer experienced in working with deaf dogs, will help her new family build a strong bond and clear communication system. After the Adoption
About a week after you adopt, a CAHS Adoption Counselor will follow-up with you to see how things are going and offer assistance should you need it.
