FINALLY, he’s done it. He’s made it to adoptable status after 308 days in custody. It has been such a long journey and we’re beyond proud of his achievement.
Inky 54708 (He kindly asks if you would refer to him by his full govt name) is a youngun, although he’s one of our longest residents.
Inky came from a colony of cats as a wee baby. Moms were co-parenting and we weren’t sure which mom was his, but so many were sick—Inky was no exception. He was ultimately removed from his mom to bottle feed in foster care. He had a puncture wound on the top of his head, and despite his voracious appetite, he was underweight.
Though tiny, his personality was always MIGHTY. From the start, Inky had a poop problem. He was always constipated. X-rays and stool softeners and MiraLAX and other medications and rectal exams (he is still bitter about that violation), bloodwork, urinalyses, and so many vet appointments that we can’t count.
Ultimately, no resolvable issue was uncovered despite 5 different vets and numerous diagnostics. He’s stable now, medically. He needs MiraLAX twice a day. That’s it. As long as he gets that, poop is forthcoming, and all is right with the world.
That’s just the boring but required medical stuff. Now for his BIG personality. He’s a ham. He’s spastic and runs all over the place and will bound from one end of the room immediately to your lap with force. If Glad Wrap was a 5 on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the most clingy substance ever known to man, Inky would be an 11. He needs his people.
He does have some stranger danger syndrome going on. Meeting new people is very scary to him, and he will hide if someone new comes over. Give him a day or two to adjust to a new person and he’s back to cling wrap mode. He forms an exceptionally close bond with his caregivers.
Cuddly? Yes. Blankets? For burrowing. Full of purrs? Also yes. Playful? So much yes! Bird watching? A favorite pastime! Food? Fish flavors, please. Takes his medicine like a champ.
Now, for the not-so-good:
Water dish habits? Poor, and he's not sorry one little bit that he likes to put his paws in it and splash it all out onto the floor. Yes, he could drink it, but that’s what all the other cats do and it's soooo boring.
Speaking of other cats.... Inky does need to be the only kitty in the home. Is he nice to other cats? Yes, if you mean does he play with them like a rag doll, incessantly pouncing and biting and wrestling beyond reason. But his love for other cats (toys) doesn’t stop him from marking when they are around. He has NOT demonstrated any marking behavior if he's not exposed to other cats.
Do you spend excessive time away from home? May we interest you in a different cat?
We wish we could describe his personality fully, but it’s impossible. He’s sweet and crazy and just needs someone who will love him almost as much as he will love you—and someone to make sure he gets the poop-care he needs.
