My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Astraea, the joy machine who turns every day into an adventure!

Astraea is the definition of joyful energy, always eager to dive into whatever comes next. She came to the ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center as a fearful stray, but with a change of scenery and a little TLC from our behavior team, she has completely opened up! She is now a confident, fun-loving pup who wakes up every morning ready to make the world fun.

Tug? That’s Astraea’s favorite warm up. Fetch? She’s already sprinting. Nose work, training games, splashing through water and exploring new places — she treats life like it’s one big “yes!” Walks are one of Astraea’s love languages. Woods, neighborhoods, trails and fields — if it’s outside, she’s in. Give her a little play first and she’ll walk with a lovely, happy rhythm beside you.

Astraea is the kind of dog who makes people smile without trying. Laugh in her presence and she lights up like you just invited her to the best party ever! She gets wiggly, bouncy and absolutely thrilled to be part of the moment. Astraea is a friend to everyone she meets, whether you’re a brand-new buddy or an old friend she already loves. Once she has gotten all her zoomies out, she transforms into a cuddly girl who thinks laps were invented just for her.

Astraea is also smart as a whip. She already knows sit and lay down, and we’re pretty sure she’s hiding a few more tricks she hasn’t revealed yet. She’s eager, motivated and loves showing off her brain as much as her playful side.

With other dogs, Astraea is a bold greeter with a lot of feelings. She has gotten along best with confident, easygoing dogs who don’t mind her big hello. A few minutes of play with her people beforehand helps her settle into her best self for dog time.

Astraea is a joyful, expressive, water-loving adventure buddy who lives life in bold print. If you want a dog who brings energy, laughter, heart and a whole lot of fun to the table, and then climbs in your lap for a cuddle break, Astraea might just be your perfect match. More about this shelter

In March 2013, the ASPCA launched the ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center, a pilot program located at St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in Madison, New Jersey. It was the first and only facility dedicated to providing behavioral rehabilitation for severely fearful, unadoptable dogs, such as those confiscated from puppy mills and hoarding situations.

Due to the success of the pilot program, which had 237 graduates over four years, the ASPCA has expanded its program and built a permanent facility in Weaverville, North Carolina. The state-of-the-art facility can house up to 65 dogs at a time. It includes a dormitory and several teaching spaces where shelter professionals can learn our behavior modification techniques, to further help behaviorally challenged dogs across the country become suitable for adoption.

Homeless dogs of all ages and backgrounds are eligible for the program, as long as they are physically healthy and meet our behavioral inclusion criteria. Only dogs whose fear is so severe that it compromises their quality of life and makes adoption challenging or impossible are accepted.

The Weaverville facility has individual kennels, along with “real-life rooms,” designed to help dogs get used to life in home environments, outdoor play areas, and a large indoor training area where our behaviorists and trainers work with dogs in the program. On average, rehabilitation requires 13 weeks of treatment. However, that timing depends heavily on the severity of each dog’s behavior problems and how responsive he or she is to treatment. Once the dogs have completed the program, the transformed graduates are placed within our network of partner shelters and rescue groups to be made available for adoption or adopted directly at our facility.
