Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Meet Lad. He's a little wobbly and a lot wonderful.
At the start of January, Lad and his brother Kai were brought to us by a local grassroots rescue organization. From the moment they arrived, it was clear that these two boys share a bond that is simply unbreakable. They sleep curled together, play together and find comfort in always being side by side. Because of this beautiful connection, Lad and Kai must be adopted together.
Lad is a handsome medium-haired boy with a soft, fluffy coat that will need regular brushing to keep him tangle-free and looking his very best. Grooming time will not only help maintain his coat, it will also be a wonderful way to bond with this special little soul.
You may notice a health waiver in Lad’s file. Lad has been diagnosed with cerebellar hypoplasia (CH). It is a neurological condition that occurs when the cerebellum (the part of the brain responsible for coordination and balance) does not fully develop. It is not contagious, not painful and not progressive. This means that it will not worsen over time.
Cats with CH often have a wobbly gait, head bobbing, or occasional loss of balance. In Lad’s case, he bobs when he focuses (especially during mealtime) and may wobble when walking.
However, CH does not impact a cat’s intelligence, personality, or ability to feel joy. Most importantly, it does not shorten life expectancy. With the right environment and simple accommodations, cats with CH can live full, happy, comfortable lives.
To help Lad thrive, he will need:
* A one-level home or apartment (he has not been exposed to stairs and we want to ensure his safety).
* Carpeted flooring, as he maintains his balance much better on carpet than hardwood.
* Elevated food and water dishes, since his head bobbing can make ground-level bowls challenging.
* An adopter committed to regular brushing to keep his beautiful coat mat-free.
Lad and Kai spent time in one of our loving foster homes, where Lad showed just how resilient and affectionate he truly is. He may wobble, but he plays, cuddles and loves just like any other kitten. His determination is inspiring and Kai is always right there, offering comfort and companionship.
Lad isn’t looking for perfection. He’s looking for patience. He’s looking for understanding. Most of all, he’s looking for a home where his differences are embraced and where he and his brother can continue their journey together. Somewhere out there is a family where Lad’s wobble will be celebrated, Kai’s devotion will be treasured and where they can always stay together. We hope that family could be you.
*Note: Our adoption consultant will discuss his health records with you in detail to make sure that any questions you may have are answered. It is important to us that you, Lad and Kai are set up for success in your life together.
The shelter is open Tuesdays through Fridays 3:30-6:30pm AND Saturdays & Sundays 1pm-4pm. No appointments are needed during those times. If you are not available during those times, special arrangements for a meet and greet may be able to be arranged by emailing arfcats@bereaanimalrescue.com. Thank you for considering the adoption of a shelter animal in need!

More about this rescue
Berea Animal Rescue Fund “ARF” began in 1987 as a small group of animal lovers started a ‘grassroots’ movement, recognizing the desperate housing and healthcare needs of homeless animals. Their efforts began in the southwest suburban Cleveland area, transforming a family’s garage into an animal "shelter."
The ARF movement grew when the city of Berea provided us a small building, utility costs included. In return, ARF would always have a cage open for the city’s stray animals. Now, after 20 years of service and thousands of success stories later ARF continues to save lives and make friends. ARF is operated in large part by a group of very dedicated volunteers who give their time and endless love to the shelter's furry residents.
Our next big goal is to position ourselves into a roomier facility…a more spacious home to the area's unwanted and abandoned animals. We believe no pet should be euthanized or left behind because lack of such a place. Our facility is overcrowded and outdated by today’s animal welfare standards. ONLY, through the generous support of the community and the dedication of our volunteers, can we make this dream a reality.
2007 was record breaking for ARF with both animals served and operating costs. Much help is needed!
The Berea Animal Rescue Fund “ARF” operates as a No Time Limit Shelter.
We are a 501(c) 3 Non Profit.
ARF's mission statement.... For the betterment of the lives of stray and abandoned animals, Berea’s Animal Rescue Fund, Inc. promises to:
Give loving care and companionship for as long as needed;
Provide shelter, food and medical necessities;
Seek quality homes through adoption programs;
Create public interest and awareness of animal rights and issues; and
Promote action and advocacy for all of the above.
