My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This is a feral momma kitty who I have been working on taming in foster with her babies. She's still likely to hiss if approached too quickly and be tightened up as hard as a rock when you touch her, but with some dedication I have gotten her to start relaxing during pets and even put her chin up and press into some neck and chin scritches. Definitely can't pick her up with your hands, but placing a blanket or towel over her makes her limp enough to handle and transport her. I believe she can be domesticated and put into a good home, but it will take continued work. Named Persephone because I got two kittens from her the year before these four kittens, so she was like Persephone coming back from the underworld every year bringing me new pretty babies. She has now been spayed to end that cycle!

Additional adoption info

Our shelter has more than 500 available cats and dogs every day!
For pets at the shelter: Adoptions must be completed in-person at the shelter. AAC is open for adoption walk-ins every day from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. A shelter pet’s availability can change at any time, so we recommend choosing a few favorites.
For pets in foster: Go to www.AustinAnimalCenter.org to find the pet's profile and click that pet's pink “Adopt Me” button. This will prompt you to complete an adoption questionnaire. Submitting an application does not hold the animal for you.
We have dozens of animals that won't be listed online yet because they're still in their stray hold period, but can be pre-adopted at the shelter in case their owner doesn't come for them.

Adoption Fees:
$80 cats up to 6 years old
$80 dogs 6 months to 6 years, 30 lbs and up
$100 kittens up to 6 months
$120 dogs under 30 lbs and/or under 6 months
No fee for senior pets 7 years and older

More about this shelter

Austin Animal Center is the largest open-intake animal shelter in central Texas and we work very hard to try to save 90% or more of the thousands of animals we shelter every year. We always need volunteers and both monetary and in-kind donations to help us in our sheltering and prevention activities. Visit our website to find out how you can help!
