My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

Introducing Ace and Luffy, brothers with an inseparable bond even if they aren't blood brothers. These two adorable little men were born roughly on September 19th, 2025 (It only suits it is International Talk like a Pirate Day). These two are ready to head off to the Grand Line in search of their ultimate treasure - Their Furever Home.

Luffy is our little orange menace with the biggest heart. He's the last one to see you off in the morning and the first to greet you when you get back with a whole string of stories to tell you of the crazy adventures he and Ace experienced during their day without you. Our Luffy sticks true to character and is quite the foodie, especially if it so happens to be rotisserie chicken, the top tier cat treat for these two. He knows no boundaries and has quite the adventure spirit. His favorite toys are wands with feathers, laser pointers and springs. Luffy is quite the goofy boy, but not quite the most coordinated. He is very full speed ahead at playtime, forgetting that breaks are a thing. He'll chase a spring and accidentally miss, running into walls. He'll jump for a window ledge or couch and fall short. He'll turn a corner at full speed and slide like he's on ice.

Now Ace, our tabby, is the very definition of Kitten Energy. He is quite active and seems to have an abundance of both physical and mental energy. He's always ready for new adventures or action, which has led him to accidentally closing himself in a room a time or two. This bundle of energy views a lot of things as toys - empty toilet paper rolls, springs, balls, fathers, lasers, mirrors, phone reflections, food. You name it, he probably thinks it's a toy ready for his attention. While he doesn't explore as much as Luffy does, he is also known to ignore rooms once he's explored them unless given a purpose for being there - such as you or his brother have ventured within without him. While Luffy is our foodie, Ace tends to run his battery dry and then need all the naps. Heaven forbid you interrupt said naps. The look of judgement this one presents you upon waking? None can compare. As we like to say, you have ground cats and tree cats. Ace is 1000% a tree cat. Not only is he casting judgement on those he can see from his cat tree or window, there is not an item he won't climb - tables, counters, beds, sinks. He likes to look at what a handsome man he is. To quote his foster dad "If Mt Everest were indoors, Ace would be the first cat to crest the peak."

Both Luffy and Ace are on the shy side, though Luffy tends to be a bit freer giving with his affections. Ace is warming up, but he isn't quite lap cat material yet. He'll fall asleep touching your hand or placing a paw against your leg, but he tends to prefer his distance at sleeping time. They also have a big fear of fireworks - likely from re-living life as pirates with all those cannon fires.

Ace and Luffy are looking to continue their adventures as brothers in arms with a new first mate. If you think Ace and Luffy would be purrfect to join your crew, please reach out to Laura at 540-272-3506.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

Almost all of our cats and kittens are raised to be indoor-only animals, although if we do take in an animal that has been indoor-outdoor and shows strong desire for that to continue, we will allow that in the placement. Indoor-only homes lead to safer and healthier cats/kittens who live longer lives. What they don't know they don't miss, and window-watching and stimulating toys and fully enrich their lives indoors.

Nearly all of our available animals are cats, as we have one part-time dog foster. We may do one batch of puppies a year.

Our adoption process is fairly simply: we talk to the potential adopters to try to determine a good fit between the adopter and the animal - for example, making sure a talkative cat goes to someone who wants a talkative cat, a lap cat is matched with someone who wants that trait, etc. We strive to make matches that keep both people and animals happy.

Once a match is met and approved (a process which generally doesn't take long), there are several forms to complete (adoption application with lots more questions, adoption contract, microchip transfer form, etc).

Animals are generally ready to go home the same day with some exceptions. Adoption fees are generally posted in each animal's biography and are to be paid in cash.

Go meet their pets

Regular adoption outreach events are held at the Mount Vernon Petco store from 11am to 3 pm.

We also have a permanent condo in the store where a cat or kitten is typically available to meet at any time during store hours; adoptions from this condo are NOT handled by store employees (although they can open the cage and show the animals), but adoption counselors can generally be reached for same-day adoptions.

Additional showings and/or adoptions are often able to be scheduled through the foster parent, so use the contact numbers in the pet's biography. We try to be accommodating, especially since we do a number of adoptions to people from outside the Skagit Valley area, including Canada and the San Juan Islands.

The Mount Vernon Petco store is off I-5 exit #227.

More about this rescue

Friends for Life Animal Rescue was founded in 2009. We are an approved 501(c)3 nonprofit group.

We are individuals who have come together with the belief that cats are more than property to toss out when inconvenient or leave behind when moving.

Most fosters have more than 5 years of fostering, with several having been involved in formal animal rescue for more than 10 years. Among our fosters are our vet, two vet techs, and two vet receptionists. One of our group's specialties is in neonatal or orphaned kitten care.

We strive to halt the repopulation cycle by spaying or neutering all animals BEFORE they are available for adoption - no vouchers or arrangements left for the new family to handle.

We believe that animals do better when in more home-like settings, with lower stress and fewer health issues as well as socialization and really getting to know the animal's characteristics, likes (chocolate milkshakes), and dislikes (fizzy stuff!).

We are all volunteer and have no central facility so that any fund we do obtain are used almost totally on the animals in our care and toward adopting them into loving forever homes.
