Meet Umber, a sleek black-and-white short haired kitten with a mysterious air and a heart that’s still learning to trust the world. Born around 11/1/25, this little shadow takes his name from the brave and thoughtful dragon in the Wings of Fire series, and like his namesake, he’s quietly navigating new territory while discovering his own courage.
Umber is still very much in his “undercover operative” phase. If he were to have a job, he would absolutely be a spy: observing from a safe vantage point, gathering intelligence on squeaky toys, and carefully assessing new humans before deciding they’ve been cleared for interaction. He’s not quite comfortable with strangers yet and can be shy when first approached. While he’s made wonderful progress and no longer hisses or swats, he’s still building confidence and prefers not to be handled too much just yet. He will tolerate being picked up, but his ideal scenario currently involves four paws on the ground and a quick exit route planned, just in case.
That said, there’s a playful, energetic kitten under that cautious exterior. Umber loves spring toys he can bat and chase across the floor, and he has a particular appreciation for Churu treats, which may or may not accelerate the trust-building process. Like any young kitten, he has bursts of zoomy enthusiasm that give way to intense play sessions and curious exploration.
Umber must be adopted into a home with another kitty friend. A confident feline companion will help show him the ropes, model bravery, and give him a built-in playmate. He watches other cats closely, and having a buddy will be key to helping him blossom into the affectionate, confident cat we know he can become.
Umber is not the kitten who will leap into your arms on day one. He is the kitten who will slowly, bravely choose you. With patience, gentle handling, and a steady routine, this shy little spy will continue to come out of his shell and reveal the loyal, loving companion underneath. If you believe the best stories are the ones where the hero grows into their strength, Umber may be your perfect match.
