Gerbils are naturally social creatures and enjoy the company of people. Starfish and I are a bonded pair. I may also enjoy the company of other gerbils but rely heavily on my nose to figure out which fellow gerbils are friends and which are foes. When introducing gerbils, it’s important to introduce them by scent first and let them become familiar with each other before expecting them to live together. Once bonded, gerbils love to have company and will tussle and play with each other often. They love to tunnel so it’s ideal to house them in a large tank with plenty of safe things to nibble on and dig in. Gerbils are typically about 6-12 inches long (including their tail, which is about half their body length) and weigh about 2-3 ounces. With proper care, gerbils can live 3-5 years.
