My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Milano — Millie for short!

Named after the Winter Olympics opening day when she was found, this petite girl is training for her biggest event yet: learning to trust again. And every day, she’s getting braver.
Millie is oh-so-sweet. She’ll chirp and gently headbutt for attention (or snacks!), then sometimes second-guess herself and take a small step back. She will tap your leg like she wants to be a lap cat… then choosing to lie right beside you instead. It’s her quiet way of trying.

She keeps a spotless litter box and always washes her dainty face and fluffy mane after meals — a proper little lady. She loves having a safe spot to observe from before joining in. She’s shown interest in calm cats and may benefit from a confident feline friend. Dogs and sudden movements make her nervous and she may swat – a quiet home would be ideal.
Millie prefers not to be picked up yet and will need a patient adopter who lets her set the pace. The bond you build with her won’t be rushed, it will be earned, making it all the more special.

If you believe in gentle progress, soft chirps, and watching love slowly win, Millie might be your gold medal girl.

Adopters have 30 days of free access to 1-on-1 text and email support from behaviorists at Petcademy to help make every pet's transition into their new home as smooth as possible. All cats available for adoption have been spayed/neutered, microchipped and are current on all vaccinations. Please email cats@henricohumane.org for more information.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

Potential adopters are carefully screened to ensure we find the right forever home for the dogs and cats we rescue. Since animals live in foster homes, we get to know their personality and temperament. The adoption process allows us to learn about you, so that we can help find the perfect match for your home.

ADOPTION PROCESS

After finding a cat or dog that you are interested in, you'll need to complete an adoption application either online (https://henricohumane.org) or at an adoption stand. An adoption coordinator will review your application to ensure your situation matches the needs of the animal you're interested in. If completing an application online, please note, every question must be answered on the application for it to be reviewed by an adoption coordinator. As part of the review process, we'll request references. Because we are an all-volunteer organization, it may take up to 48 hours for an adoption coordinator to contact you.

ADOPTION FEES:
All of our adoption fee amounts can be found here:
https://www.henricohumane.org/adopt

The adoption fee covers the cost of shots, spay/neuter, microchipping and worm/flea treatments.

Adoption stands are held on Saturdays at Petco Short Pump (Next to Trader Joe's) minus major holiday weekends. Adoption stands are from 11-2 but please see our stand schedule for up to date information. (https://henricohumane.org/events/).

Please note that not all animals come to stand so if you are interested in a specific animal, please email dogs@henricohumane.org or cats@henricohumane.org on the Friday prior to stand. Thank you!

More about this rescue

Henrico Humane Society is an all-volunteer, foster-based,
non-profit organization that rescues dogs and cats from
across Central Virginia and places them in loving, forever
homes.

HHS has saved hundreds of animals each year since
1991. Many of the dogs and cats we rescue come from
shelters in rural areas where they have fewer adoption
opportunities. The majority of the animals in our care live
with foster parents until they find a permanent home.

We don't have a shelter and most of our animals live in foster homes until they're adopted, which allows us to get to know their personality and temperament. Applicants are carefully screened to ensure we find the right forever home for the dogs and cats we rescue. Our adoption process allows us to learn about potential adopters so we can help find the perfect matcher their home.
