At the top of Maya's priority list are cuddles, a big blanket, and her jammies. Maya had some hard years, and now she's ready to chill. She's people-friendly and a great listener. Leash trained and house trained, she's eager to please and looks for direction to do a good job. She looks out for her people, and she loves when that attention is given back to her.
Maya is excellent with children, but she is very protective, especially when other dogs are present. She is great with cats once introduced. She has been in foster with us since Fall 2025, healing from heartworm and improving her mobility and spine health (see below). She's ready for her new home!
Maya was adopted from a shelter in South Carolina and had a great life with her adoptive mom until this past year. Now, Maya needs a home that can care for her special needs. As an older dog, she has history. Maya is very scared of gun shots and thunderstorms, and she looks to humans for protection when she's scared. Both of her hind ACLs were torn when she was young which effected her gait and hips, but she has always managed that well with her "bunny run". Maya had a bad fall down a flight of stairs a few years ago; so, she will need regular-but-mild exercise to keep her spine and back legs healthy. She will need to live in a one story home with few stairs, and although she loves to cuddle on the couch and in bed, jumping down from elevation is not good for her. If you are interested in meeting Maya, more information on her care and condition will be given and her medical records will be transferred to her adopter.
