My name is Megumi!

Megumi was left in a box at Orange County Animal Services along with 12 other bunnies. She came into our care in September of 2024. Megumi is a sweet and curious bunny with a big heart and an even bigger appetite!  She absolutely adores gentle cheek and forehead rubs, often closing her eyes in contentment. 

One morning, Megumi woke up with  a very tilted head. She was rushed to Exotic Animal Hospital of Orlando where they ran a test to see if she had E.Cuniculi (EC).  EC is a very common microsporidian parasite in rabbits affecting the nervous system, kidneys, and eyes, often causing head tilt. It is not a death sentence.  In fact, almost 90% of all rabbits have EC in their system, which is passed on from their mother. It lies dormant in most rabbits for their entire lives.  Unfortunately, some experience a flare-up, like Megumi. However, on a bright note, none of the multiple tests we have done for her, have ever shown an active infection.  Her infection has remained inactive, therefore, she is not contagious to other bunnies.

Megumi does not let EC get in her way. Even with a severe head tilt, she is able to hop around quite well, with only the occasional roll. She is currently on some medication that helps keep her from getting dizzy. Megumi enjoys playing like any other bunny. She has toys that she likes to throw around and enjoys chewing on applewood sticks and bamboo safe chew toys.   We are retraining her on how to use a low litter box. However, with the right bedding, she is very easy to care for. In her photos you can see her friend Bruce, the Moose. She grooms him and likes to lay next to him. We think Megumi might want a friend. We would only bond her with a bunny that has had EC or been exposed to EC in the past. If you have a bunny with EC exposure that would like a friend too, Megumi might be your girl.

Our Adoption Fee/Donation for a single rabbit is $100, a pair is $170, and a triple is $200. This helps to offset the cost of having the rabbits altered, microchipped and vaccinated, as well as any medical care that may have been required.
