Quincy is a handsome 6 year old neutered male cat, up to date on vaccinations. Here’s what his foster volunteer says about him:
How would you describe the cat's general personality?
After getting to know you in the first few days, he is extremely relaxed while simultaneously being very inquisitive and playful. He mostly sleeps during the day, coming out a few times to play or eat. He likes to sleep in dark rooms if there is a comfy place, but will sleep in the open if there is no bed in a dark corner for him. His inquisitive nature means he will try to get into any nook and cranny that he can – on top of cabinets and tall furniture. If he can find a way to get there, he will.
Does the cat enjoy being pet?
He does, but at the beginning you will need to wait for him to ask to be pet. And when he does, he can also decide rather abruptly that he doesn’t want to be pet and will bite or swat, so it is best to be aware of his behaviors while you are touching him. As he gets more used to you and you to him, he will relax more and the only time you really need to be cautious is when he’s stimulated/playing.
If yes, on what parts of its body does the cat like to be pet?
Chin, behind the ears, and down his back.
Are there any parts of its body that the cat does NOT like being touched?
He does not like being pet on his belly or focused attention on the spot where his back meets his tail.
Does the cat come on your lap?
Yes!
Does the cat like to be held?
When he is first getting to know you, he doesn’t want to be held, but as he gets more comfortable around you, you could pick him up and hold him so that he is perched over your shoulder His surrenders mentioned they could pick him up, but that it might take a bit longer before his new owners are able to do so. Additionally, when you start picking him up, you need to do so with confidence and don’t hesitate because he will pick up on it and try to keep you from picking him up. But once he’s perched over your shoulder, he doesn’t mind it.
Does the cat sleep in your bed?
Yes! He will sleep right next to you or around your feet/legs, often in the crook of your knees or between your legs. If you sleep next to a body pillow, he might also place himself between you and the pillow. When he sleeps in the bed with you, he will make it his mission to make sure he is touching you or on you.
Does the cat seek your attention?
Yes! Particularly when he wants to play or when you wake up in the morning, he may want some scratches. If he’s lounging in his bed and you call for him, he’ll also sometimes come.
Does the cat like to play?
Very much!
What are the cat's favorite games and toys?
He likes wand toys, mouse toys, and catnip pouches. He also likes interactive ball toys.
How vocal is the cat?
He will talk to you, but he isn’t overly chatty. He mostly talks when he wants to play or wants food.
What kinds of sounds does the cat make?
Upon first introduction into a new environment without people he knows, he will growl, hiss, and maybe yowl at night. After he trusts you, he will make mostly short meows – not quite chirping, but similar. He purrs, but you can hardly hear it.
Does the cat scratch a scratcher?
Yes – he will also scratch any rough fabric surface he can get a grip on, so be sure to have enough scratchers.
If no, please explain.
Does the cat always use the litter box?
So far, yes. His surrenders mentioned that his box should be cleaned everyday or he might decide its too dirty and go on the floor, but so far he has only used his litterbox while being fostered.
If no, please explain.
What food and frequency is the cat currently eating?
Half a can of Purina ProPlan chicken (the shredded version, not pate) in the morning, and half at night. Maybe about 2 handfuls of dry food to snack on during the day, and at at night. A few pieces of Hill’s prescription dental cat food are included with the dry food once a day.
Is the cat picky about food?
According to his surrenders, he prefers chicken flavored food and does not like wet pate.
What is the cat's favorite treat?
He loves the squeeze treats (including fish flavored varieties), and dry treats, too.
Does the cat ever swat (claws in) at you? If so, under what circumstances?
Yes. When he first moves into a new space without someone he knows, he will be very scared and one of the ways this manifests is by hissing, swatting, and growling. To avoid swatting, it is best to give him a lot of space to be in, and when y’all cross paths, let him pass first before continuing on.
Has the cat ever scratched (claws out) you?
Yes – the first day he moved in and not since. This was his response to being very scared at being in a new environment without anyone he knows.
Does the cat ever nip (teeth without breaking skin) you?
Yes, he will do little nips if you let him smell you and he decides he doesn’t want to be pet.
Has the cat ever bitten you (breaking skin)?
Yes. When he gets stimulated, either while playing – or from petting – he will rather abruptly turn and bite. They are hard bites, so they break skin, but he doesn’t bite for longer than about 2 seconds. If you give him a firm no, without freaking out or pulling away, he should let go. Its best to be hyper aware of him when you are engaging in any way with your hands, even when he is rubbing his face all over yours.
To the best of your knowledge, how does the cat react to new people? Social? Fearful?
If there is someone he trusts/knows, he is social – he will come out and say hi and he might even sit on their lap. The same awareness to petting should be imparted to guests.
If you have observed the cat with other animals, please describe how they get on?
I have not observed his interactions with other animals, but according to his surrenders he did have a feline sibling at some point and he has not reacted with hostility to the smells of other cats.
Does that cat have any cute/quirky traits that aren’t covered by the previous questions?
He loves rolling around on carpeted surfaces, will rub his face in your hair whenever he’s sitting behind you, and will make biscuits when relaxed. He also boot scoots after using the litterbox frequently, but not every time. Sometimes, when he gets zoomies, he likes to almost be chased. When he gets like this, I’ll just move a little quickly towards him. He’ll either stay and accept head scritches, or he’ll run to a new spot and wait for you to chase again.
In your opinion, what is the best thing about the cat? Why should an adopter choose THIS cat to adopt?
After first getting to know you, he is an EXTREMELY sweet cat that just has some touch sensitivities when he’s stimulated. It will seem like he hates you at first – you just need to be patient and wait until he asks you for pets. If you want a cat that will spread out across your torso when relaxing on the couch or a warm furry friend next to you in bed, he will be all of those things.
What are the cat's challenges and how have you found to best manage them?
The biggest challenge is his biting and the only way to manage that is to stay aware and to constantly be reading his body language when you are petting him in any way. Other than that, if you have plants he will want to eat them and he is very determined to get to them so you’ll have to be creative to keep him from getting to them. I’ve found the best way to do this is to put it up really high and to block off any access by creating height or the illusion of height to keep him from jumping up to it.
