My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

FRIED GREEN TOMATOES
17 lbs of Southern Sass & Cinematic Charm

A Dog With Whistle Stop Energy
FGT is sweet like Ruth, mischievous like Idgie, and loyal enough to help you run the Whistle Stop Café without burning the place down. He loves everyone, walks beautifully on leash, and keeps a crate so clean it would pass any health inspection — even Sipsey’s.

He’s:
Spunky — tiny but full of personality
Sweet — loves every human he meets
Social — great with dogs and cats
Polished — clean crate, good manners, big heart

He’s the kind of dog who would absolutely:
Help you run a café
Save you from metaphorical trains
Throw food at idiots
And then curl up in your lap like a warm fried tomato slice
And yes — he would steal your fried green tomatoes off the counter and then look at you like you should apologize.

A Little “TOWANDA!” in His Soul
FGT carries the spirit of Evelyn Couch discovering her power — that moment she yells “TOWANDA!” and decides she’s done being polite. That’s him. Not chaotic… just confidently unhinged in the most charming way.

He’s got maincharacter energy, tinyking swagger, and the emotional range of someone who has absolutely flipped a grocerystore cart in his mind.

He’s bold enough to make you laugh, sweet enough to melt you, and spirited enough to remind you that life is better when you live it with a little TOWANDA in your chest.

Ready for His Next Chapter
He’s portable, hilarious, affectionate, and ready for adventure — the kind of dog who would hop on a boat, charm the entire marina, and then nap like he just worked an eighthour shift at the café serving barbecue that may or may not have been sourced from a problematic husband.

FGT is a feelgood movie wrapped in fur: heartwarming, funny, and unforgettable.

Additional adoption info

Our mission is to find the best possible homes for the animals in our care. Many of them have been through severe hardship, mistreatment or neglect, and that makes it even more important that we do our best for them. This means that we have to have guidelines because not every adopter is right for every animal. We try to do right by every person who comes our way looking for a new family pet. But sometimes we have to say “no” to a potential adopter. Our animals do not have a say in where they go; since we speak for those who have no voice, we must do it well. Our rejection of an adoption application is no reflection on the adopter. Everyone who wants to adopt an animal from a shelter or rescue group is special because they open their homes to those in need. But, while we try to meet the needs of everyone, our clients are the animals. They have no one else. We appreciate your understanding.

More about this rescue

The mission of Hounds in Pounds (HIP), is to end the daily killing of thousands of adoptable dogs in the United States. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in New Jersey and Georgia and we rely 100% on donations.

HIP has a multi-faceted approach to achieving our mission, combining rescue, adoption, spay/neuter outreach and public education. Dogs rescued by Hounds in Pounds are transported to private veterinarians for proper medical treatment, where they are vetted, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped and tested for heartworm before being placed into new, loving homes. We work as a team, communicating from sunrise to sundown to manage the many moving pieces that make our work successful.

Each dog we pull to safety is a member of our family and is treated with the utmost love and respect. We are a lifeline for thousands of dogs that otherwise wouldn’t stand a chance. Many of the dogs we rescue are cases that no one else will take, as our motto at HIP is to “never say never”. To be clear, we are working for them. These dogs are our heroes, and we look to them for hope, inspiration and sometimes the strength to keep going. We also consider our followers, donors, adopters, rescue partners and the rescue community a direct extension of our team. Without each of these moving parts, Hounds in Pounds wouldn’t be able to do what we do.

As one can imagine, the costs associated with running an operation of this magnitude are extraordinary. We fulfill our mission by collaborating with local shelters, veterinarians, boarding facilities, transporters, and local businesses, and through the generosity of donors and supporters. It is thanks to our dedicated volunteers and the benevolent donations of our HIP family of supporters that any of this is possible.
