Their adoption process

In New South Wales, the greyhounds live with the owners, not in a crate at the track. With input of the dog's owner and evaluations done by professional trainers, we know a lot about the greyhound. The dogs are assessed, tested for prey drive (good with cats? good with small dogs?) and if the owner had children, the ages of the children are provided.

The dogs are vaccinated, desexed and evaluated by a vet at intake and again days before flight. The Aussie Mates in the States team completes the necessary import paperwork, coordinates flight information and make sure the dogs are cared for every step of the way of their journey.

Adoption steps

  1. Submit Application
Start by completing an application and one of our adoption reps will reach out to you, answer questions and get the process started.
  2. Interview
This is not a test! Our interviews are conversations to learn more about you, your lifestyle and answer any questions.
  3. Home Check
Whether done in person or virtually, the purpose of the home check is to help greyhound proof your home.
  4. Approve Application
Once your application is complete, we'll share the available greyhounds and together determine which dog would be the best fit.
  5. Sign Adoption Contract
The finish line---sign the adoption agreement, pay the adoption fee and begin the "happily ever after".

More about this rescue

We work directly with Greyhounds as Pets, New South Wales's (Sydney) US rehoming program called "Aussie Mates in the States.) Greyhound Welfare is first and foremost when racing in New South Wales. In fact, the organization funds a domestic and international rehoming program to assist with finding retired racers a forever home.

The information about the greyhound's personality comes directly from the owner. The dogs are reassessed for cat and small dog workability, prey drive and ability to climb stairs. We're proud to share that with a full picture of the greyhound, we have successfully placed dogs directly in their adoptive homes.

Combine with our many years of experience with placing US greyhound and the care and commitment of the Aussie's Mates in the State team, you'll adopt a wonderful greyhound with ongoing support.
