Their adoption process

Interested adopters complete an adoption application through Nickel City Cats. Applications are reviewed individually with the goal of finding the best possible match between the adopter and the animal.

Our process considers the individual cat's personality, medical needs, household environment, existing pets, and the adopter's circumstances. Approved applicants are contacted to discuss the animal and arrange the next steps toward adoption.

Our animals are adopted from foster homes rather than from a public shelter facility.

More about this rescue

Nickel City Cats is a volunteer-run, foster-based cat rescue serving Sudbury and Northeastern Ontario. We rescue cats and kittens who are abandoned, surrendered, stray, or otherwise in need of safe placement and veterinary care.

Our work is about more than finding homes for cats. We believe that supporting animals also means supporting the people who love them. Circumstances can change, and families may face financial, housing, health, behavioural, or other barriers that make caring for a pet difficult. We strive to approach these situations with compassion and without judgment, helping people explore safe and practical options whenever possible.

We are committed to accessible, barrier-aware animal rescue and believe that asking for help should never mean being shamed or turned away. When possible, we work to keep people and their pets together through education, resources, referrals, and preventative support. When surrender is the safest or most appropriate option, we work to make that process as compassionate and respectful as possible.

All animals in our care remain in foster homes while receiving the veterinary care, socialization, and individual attention they need before adoption. We take the time to learn about each animal as an individual and work to find a safe, loving, permanent home that is a good match for their personality and needs.

Our long-term goal is not simply to rescue more cats, but to reduce the number of cats who need rescue in the first place. Through spay and neuter access, education, community support, and compassionate intervention, we hope to address the barriers that contribute to cats entering the rescue system.

At the heart of Nickel City Cats is a simple belief: cats deserve safe and loving homes, and people deserve compassion when they need help getting there.
