My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hugo is a once in a lifetime dog. He is between 2 and 3 years old, and a rough sable male. He was found as a stray, when he moved into someone's backyard and refused to leave. Apparently he was deliberately abandoned, so it was no surprise that no one came to claim him after 2 weeks of notification at the local shelter,. Hugo immediately made a HUGE-O impression on NCR. This dog is Lassie! He loves people and only wants to be with his person. He is all wags, wiggly, and friendly. He is an active dog, perfect for a family with older children. He is a total character and frankly, a dog genius. His favor thing is finding things to push with his nose so that he can see what happens. Just today he rang the ringer of the FAX machine phone, when he pushed the buttons with his nose to see what would happen. He will test just about anything but the more noise and movement he can create with his nose-pushing, the better he likes it. Oh, and he also eats socks whole, slamming them down like a raw oyster.

Hugo adores cats. Hugo is being fostered with a kitten, and the two of them play like gangbusters. In fact, his kitten is also available for adoption and it would be fun if they landed in the same home. Hugo is fairly clutzy in his dog manners, a little on the rude side. He does get along fine with his foster mom's multiple dog setting, but only after they ALL told him off. He's best in a home with no other dogs, but an exception could be made for a dog-savvy household.

Hugo is HUGE-O himself, standing at least 26" at the withers and destined to be around 80 lbs lean when he fills out--he came into emaciated and weak, with little muscle development. That hasn't lasted long as he has a HUGE-O appetite, and three strides can carry him across most back yards. He is completely housebroken and well mannered. He was untrained when he arrived in NCR, but training him has been incredibly easy as he is so eager to please. His fosterers have made a lot of progress in teaching him various things he needs to know, like coming when he is called. He was very emotionally needy when he arrived in NCR but he has gotten so much better now that he feels secure and loved. Still, we want to place him in home where he will not be left alone routinely for many hours a day, especially because he can't enjoy the company of other dogs..

The worst news about Hugo is that he suffers from an autoimmune disorder common in collies, that causes his thyroid to be low. Right now he is rather bald on his hindquarters and itchy, but he is recovering nicely, and will recover completely, now that he is taking his daily thyroid medicine, which he'll have to take for the rest of his life. Luckily, this medicine is not expensive, he will cover fully, and his condition is not serious when it is treated. New 7/26/07-updated 8/25/07.
