Story
Margot is soon to be `paw-roled` from our Paws in the Pen program in partnership with the New Mexico Corrections Department! Each dog is paired with inmate trainers and enrolled in an 8-week training program that is designed to equip the dog with a nice foundation of training that will help them succeed in their new home. Each of these dogs will go home potty and crate trained with a whole list of cues and basic behaviors; to ensure a successful adoption, we are providing four training sessions to adopters, so you can learn what your dog knows, and an invitation to weekly discounted drop-in classes. These dogs also go home with a biothane leash and collar, 6 months of heartworm prevention, are fully up-to-date on all vaccines and medications, and are spayed and neutered.Margot is a 1-year-old, 25-lb bundle of love, cuddles, and pure personality. She’s got a silly, quirky side that will keep you smiling—and once she decides you’re her person, she’s all in.Margot may take a minute to feel comfortable with new people and environments, but give her a little time and you’ll see her confidence bloom. Once she settles in, she prances around like she owns the place (because, obviously, she does). She’s great with other dogs and can live with cats too—though fair warning, she may attempt to lick a cat’s face clean if given the chance. We also strongly suspect she might be part meerkat, thanks to her impressive ability to stand straight up on her hind legs and survey her kingdom.Margot is a true “nose-forward” dog who lives for a good sniff and would likely excel in scent work or nose games. When she’s not busy exploring the world one smell at a time, she’s happiest being close to her people—occupying laps, handing out kisses, and soaking up all the love.Margot would thrive in a home where she can be around her family often, with plenty of affection, companionship, and faces to smooch. If you’re looking for a loyal little shadow with a big heart and a goofy streak, Margot just might be your girl.

Story
Hello folks! I'm Nutmeg and I'm everything you're looking for in a dog. Need housetrained? I wouldn't dream of making a mess. Need a girl who excels at agility and is active but also loves lounging with you on the sofa with you watching Netflix? Righty-oh! Thats me. Want a pup who pays close attention to everything her owners says? I'm your girl! I know my commands, look and listen, and focus well on my people. But more than that, I've lived in a family with children and was the apple of my family's eye. They could not keep me but can attest to the love in my heart, the goodness of my soul, the gentleness and kindness I bring to my home. I'm an absolute gem and I aim to show you that on our very first meeting. I am five years old, maybe a beagle/terrier mix, and 40 pounds. I am friendly, happy, and sweet. I've lived well with a dog my size and my family said I am good with cats too. I would be happy to have a family where there is usually someone around like a parent or another pet, as I am used to a lot of togetherness. I enjoy being in a loving home so much and I cannot wait until I have that again. Until then, I'll keep making everyone here at Desert Haven smile. I have a big beautiful one of my own too and I like to use it often. I'm a happy girl even though I have a medical condition. I have diabetes. This is a condition which requires me to have a shot of insulin after I eat breakfast and another shot of insulin after supper. I'll need these insulin injections for the rest of my life. My insulin helps me stay healthy and I know that so guess what I do? I sit perfectly well for my shot. My caretaker is able to give my shot lickety split and then we hug and it's like it didn't even happen! I'm such a good girl. I wonder if there is a human diabetic out there that would love me as a companion? But really, the shots are pretty simple so anyone who is awesome could make me part of their family and the folks at Desert Haven will teach you all about my healthcare plan and how to do my injections and meal timings. My health condition is a blip in my day really. The rest of the time we spend hanging out and snuggling together. I have a big soft cushy doggie bed and I love to jump into it then I get cozy. I love going for walks too. I'll also be spending a lot of time snoozing lots of the day away because you know how us dogs like to snoozeatooze. But don't forget play time because that's on of my favorite times of the day. Chase chase chase the toys! Squeak squeak squeak. Most of all though, I crave love. I am love! So if I'm your girl, there will be big love in store for all of us. I am a bestie of all besties. Are you in need of a companion? I am yours. To meet me: Drop in at Desert Haven on Tuesdays 9-4 or call/text 575-740-0643 to schedule an appointment any day of the week because guess what Greta does, she drops everything to do intros!
