For Adoption: Shailey!
Please read our dog bios carefully to be sure that the dog you are applying for suits your family and lifestyle.
We at PDR believe in the benefits of post-adoption training for our dogs and their families. This allows for continued socialization, learning and helps to create a well-mannered and balanced dog. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process.

Shailey is a one-year-old Beagle-Australian Cattle Dog mix weighing about 30 pounds, with a lean, athletic build and the sweetest expression you could imagine. Her coat is mostly white with lovely brown speckles and flecks throughout, accented by a few larger brown spots on her back. She has a mostly brown head, a white blaze on her forehead, a white muzzle with a black nose, warm brown eyes, and adorable little brown ears that are shorter than a typical beagle’s. Her freckled black-and-white tail gives away her moods instantly, and most of the time it’s happily wagging.
If we had to describe Shailey in just a few words, it would be this: easygoing, affectionate, and a wonderfully gentle soul.
Shailey came to PDR after being brought to a local pound as a stray. It was later discovered that her previous owner was an elderly person who simply could not keep up with the needs of a young dog. Her arrival to our rescue was a matter of her owner’s circumstance, not Shailey’s behavior. And that fact was evident from the first day we met Shailey. This sweet girl is confident, emotionally steady, and remarkably well-adjusted. Aside from some understandable nerves during her first few hours of transition, she settled into her foster home almost immediately. Within a day, she was relaxed, comfortable, and acting like she had always belonged there.
Shailey has a wonderful “off switch.” Indoors, she is incredibly calm and content. She loves lounging on the couch, curling up beside her people, or simply being in the same room while you go about your day. She’ll happily watch a two-hour movie with you without moving and then join you in the kitchen to supervise dinner preparation. In fact, she is so easy to live with that you sometimes forget she’s there… until she gently nudges your hand for another belly rub. Outdoors, she enjoys moderate bursts of energy. She loves to explore the yard, trot along the fence line, and take in all the interesting scents. Because of that beagle nose, a securely fenced yard is strongly recommended, as she could be tempted to follow a good scent if given the opportunity.
Unlike what some might expect from her breeds, Shailey is not mischievous, overly nose-driven, or prone to rummaging. She does not counter-surf, does not help herself to unattended plates, and only chews on her toys and chew sticks. There is no herding behavior present that we’ve seen, and she is far more interested in relaxing comfortably than managing anyone’s movements. She is quiet, not easily startled, and has a calm demeanor overall. She may bark occasionally outdoors in response to another dog in the distance, but inside the home she is peaceful and settled.
Shailey enjoys her walks and being outside, though winter weather has limited our outings in the short time we’ve known her. On her leash, she is generally pleasant to walk with. She stays close, does not pull excessively, and is easy to redirect if needed. She may pull a little if she spots another dog, but overall she is manageable and responsive. She does have an enthusiastic greeting style and may jump up to say hello to new people, and we’ve been working to tame this behaviour, something her future family will want to continue with her. Her excitement is friendly and happy, not pushy, and with consistency this can easily be refined. She would benefit from continued leash manners and basic obedience work, which is very typical for a young dog her age.
Shailey is exceptionally gentle. She is fully comfortable with being touched, handled, and examined. Ear checks, mouth checks, paw handling – all are met with calm acceptance (and usually tail wags). Her foster family and veterinarian alike have been impressed with her docile and accommodating nature. She is soft-mouthed, not protective over food or toys, and does not show any guarding behaviors.
Her coat is short and easy-care. She sheds lightly to moderately (similar to a beagle), so adopters should expect some hair on clothing and furniture. Otherwise, grooming is minimal and straightforward.
Shailey arrived fully house trained and has not had a single accident in her foster home. She learned the routine immediately and politely signals when she needs to go out by standing at the door and looking back at her people. When she wants to come back inside, she waits at the door and may give a single bark if she’s been waiting a little longer. She is crate trained and does very well. Shailey sleeps peacefully overnight in a wire crate without a peep. During the day, she can be crated for several hours at a time and remains calm and relaxed, often sleeping while she waits. Treats help encourage her into the crate, and she continues to grow more comfortable with it.
We have used her crate to transport her in the car and she does well enough, although she never quite relaxes fully. She is alert and sitting at attention, observing what she can. We’ve had her for car rides up to 30 minutes without any issue. She does not eat in her crate – her meals are served in the kitchen. She eats kibble twice daily and enjoys it, though too many treats throughout the day can reduce her appetite at mealtime. For best results, treats should be given in moderation.
Shailey has had limited interactions with other dogs due to winter conditions, but her responses with the few she has met have been friendly and enthusiastic. She greets other dogs with happy, wiggly excitement, but nevertheless – caution should always be exercised when introducing her to new dogs or people. She has not yet been tested with cats. She shows moderate curiosity toward squirrels but does not bark excessively or chase obsessively, and she has shown little interest in birds.
Shailey currently lives in a calm, adult household and thrives in that environment. Based on her temperament, she would likely do well in a family home, particularly with older, respectful children, over the age of 7yrs. Because she may be tempted to follow her nose outdoors, exterior doors and gates should always be secured. A responsible household that understands supervision and secure spaces will help ensure her safety.
She would be happiest in a home where she is not left alone for long workdays. Shailey truly loves being part of daily life – on the couch, in the kitchen, or joining you for walks. At the same time, she is not demanding or clingy. When affection is offered, she happily accepts and gently asks for more – but when it’s time to relax, she settles beautifully.
Shailey knows the “sit” and “down” commands, especially when treats are involved, and comes readily when her name is called. She is beginning to learn the “stay” command with some success. She is receptive and eager, and would thrive in a basic obedience class. Continued training will help refine her greeting manners and strengthen her recall.
We’re happy to report that Shailey is fully vaccinated, spayed, microchipped, and at a healthy weight. She has a clean bill of health with no ongoing medical concerns. At the vet, she was friendly, cooperative, and impressively calm. Staff reported that she was quiet and well-behaved during her stay.
Shailey is an absolute love muffin who brings warmth and calm wherever she goes. She is deeply affectionate without being needy, playful without being overwhelming, and energetic without being demanding. She will thrive in a home that values companionship – a family or individual who wants a dog nearby while they live their daily life. She loves snuggles on the couch, morning belly rubs, and simply being close to her people. With her gentle temperament, easy manners, and steady disposition, Shailey is a truly special little girl. She brightens our home just by being in it – and we know she will make her future family very happy.
