Story
Meet Ruben HumphreyRuben Humphrey is a 10-year-old poodle and terrier mix weighing just 14 pounds, with soft white silky fur, a jaunty curly tail, and the joyful energy of a dog who feels far younger than his age. After coming to CAWS as a stray from a local shelter, Ruben has truly blossomed into a loving, affectionate companion who delights in his people and his daily adventures.Ruben is the kind of dog who makes you feel special. When he sees his human, he lights up instantly, hopping with excitement and leaning in for cuddles and attention. Once he bonds, he becomes a devoted little shadow who wants nothing more than to be close to the person he loves. He is incredibly sweet, deeply affectionate, and happiest when he is near his people.Despite being a senior, Ruben has impressive energy and curiosity. Walks are one of his greatest joys. His happy zig-zag trot and enthusiastic pace bring a sense of fun to every outing and make even a short walk feel like an adventure worth savoring.Ruben has made remarkable progress in his foster home, especially with resource guarding. With consistent routines, clear boundaries, and calm support, he has improved tremendously and continues to grow every day. He will do best with an adopter who is comfortable maintaining structure around mealtimes and continuing the thoughtful management that has helped him succeed. He enjoys the company of other well-known dogs and plays well with his foster siblings, both large and small. Ruben does best with dogs he knows and trusts, as he can get nervous and even feisty when he comes across a new (and therefore frightening) dog. He would thrive with a confident, friendly canine companion who enjoys play and social interaction.New people can make Ruben a little unsure at first, especially in his home, but he has shown great progress here as well. With gentle reassurance and a bit of patience, he settles quickly and is soon ready to show off his affectionate, charming personality. Once he feels safe, he connects deeply and wholeheartedly.Ruben loves being near his people and is learning that his crate can be a cozy, secure place to relax. He has not been cat-tested yet other than cats he meets on his walks. If you are looking for a snuggly, devoted companion who has already done so much growing and is ready to keep building confidence in a loving home, Ruben Humphrey may be the perfect fit. To meet this delightful little dog, please fill out an application at www.caws.org/adoption-application.CAWS does not place animals on a first-come, first-served basis.
