He is vision impaired but it definitely does not stop him. He eats well, has great potty manners, and his little tail wags all the time! He is the best boy and it breaks our hearts he has not been adopted yet. But he remains happy and ready for his new home. Update 5/25/2025: Chester remains happy and is ready for adoption Foster mom says, he is absolutely the easiest boy I have fostered. He's happy and he loves everyone! He is a joy! Meet Chester! He is a sweet senior poodle (mix) from the Chesapeake Animal Shelter. He is a sweet little old man looking for a warm lap and all the love he can handle! He was originally in a shelter and adopted to a family but ended up as a stray again. Now he is safe in our rescue and looking for a place to retire. He will need to see an eye specialist and the primary vet then he will be available for adoption. He is vision impaired but he doesn't let that get him down. He is a 'go with the flow' kind of dude! Chester had his dental Monday, May 18th and came through with flying colors. Foster mom said he slept through the night, got up and took his meds like a champ then settled back down for a post op senior snooze! Chester is a very spry little man. What he lacks in vision he gained in heart. He is very loving. His tail wags all the time. Now that his dental is completed and his mouth is feeling so much better, he is loving life. He's just the perfect boy according to foster mom! Chester does have a low functioning thyroid. He is currently on medication for this and will need to remain on it for life. The medication costs about $3 a month from Chewy. He is also on eye drops for a few weeks. He will return to the eye specialist to see if he will need them forever. Chester is the victim of neglect. If someone would have taken him to the vet as a puppy, he most likely would not be blind. The eye specialist said her guess would be he had distemper as a puppy which can cause blindness. Routine vaccines can prevent so many unnecessary issues in dog. Please use this example as a reminder to vaccinate, spay/neuter, microchip, and test for heartworm disease. Remi is a precious little girl who is just beginning her new chapter in rescue after coming to us from the Chesapeake Animal Shelter as an owner surrender. While it was a difficult decision for her previous family, it's clear that Remi is ready to find a loving home where she can truly thrive. Though she's still new and we're getting to know her personality more each day, one thing is already certain-Remi is incredibly sweet and gentle. She does have some cloudiness in her eyes, but she navigates her surroundings well, and her foster mom does not believe she is fully blind. Remi is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on all vaccines, so she's ready for her forever family. She has a great appetite (she loves mealtime!) and is making steady progress with house training. She is crate trained, sleeps peacefully through the night in her own bed, and has a calm, quiet nature-she rarely barks. She gets along wonderfully with other dogs and has even done well with a rabbit in her foster home, showing her gentle and easygoing temperament. Remi also enjoys cuddling and being close to her people, making her the perfect little companion. For inquiries email kathyb@compactcaninerescur.org Fee: $600 Location: Chesapeake, VA Meet Princeton! Prince is a 6 year old, 16 pound Bichon. He comes to us from the Chesapeake Shelter. He has had his entire world flipped upside down. The family who purchased him from a pet store decided they can no longer care for him. So, they took him to the shelter. The shelter is overflowing and reached out to us for help. Of course we scooped him up immediately! He was very nervous the first 24 hours. He barked, paced and panted a lot. But, his foster mom helped him through it. She took him to the groomer and he is feeling and looking so much better. His coat was matted to the skin so he had a complete shavedown. Now he can grow his beautiful coat out again. As expected, Princeton has some anxiety. He doesn't understand why he isn't in his home anymore. He wants to be near his people all the time. In time this may lessen but for now, we are making sure he feels safe. He follows foster mom everywhere...even to the bathroom for showers! Princeton was very good at the groomer. He was even falling asleep while he was being clipped!! What a sweet guy! He will be best served in an active home where he can walk daily and follow his person around the house. He does not need another dog but he does get along with other dogs. He is playful so another playful dog would be the best match for him. A fenced yard would be a plus so he can explore, sniff and work on house manners. Preference will be given to adopters who are home during the day. If you are an active retiree or work from home, Prince would be an idea dog for you. Prince will be neutered on September 23, 2026. Once healed he will be ready for adoption.
