His story is a sad one – but you can give it a happy ending! Goosifer was discovered wandering in March and needed to be live-trapped. He was scared, emaciated, and had a broken front leg. With shelters as overwhelmed as they are right now, his future was very uncertain – but Goosifer quickly won over the shelter staff and they fought hard for him. Goosifer spent over three months at the shelter, getting weekly splint changes, with everyone holding out hope that his leg would heal enough for him to survive. Goosifer was an absolute champ and his leg started to slowly heal. Speak! for the Unspoken was able to step in and get him out of the shelter to finish healing in a home. He is adjusting well to his new setting, but he is a shy boy. Fast movements will make him startle and bark and he seems to have more fear of men. Moving slowly and giving him time to get to know you is very important. But it’s worth every moment when he decides that you are a safe person – then he becomes an absolute doll who never wants to leave your side, will lean on you so hard for scratches that you fall over, and sleep so soundly by you that he snores. If you’ve really won him over, he will spread himself on his back so that you can get to all the good spots on his tummy for the most important scritches. Goosifer is being fostered in a family with two kids and two other dogs. He is enjoying being part of a family and has been an excellent house guest. If the kids move too fast, he will do his growling and barking but that has lessened every day. He leaves the dogs to themselves (except when they get in between him and someone he wants to pet him, in which case he forgets that he’s 146 pounds and just shoves them out of the way). Goosifer has the usual mastiff tendencies – there is a lot of drool (though mostly just when there is food around), he can’t keep water in the water bowl, and it’s a bit like having a small horse around. Because Goosifer needs time to build trust, his adoption will require multiple meetings before he goes home. For that reason, a family within a reasonable driving distance may be the best fit for him. We don't know much about his past, but we are excited to help him findthe bright future he deserves. Melvin is a big, goofy boy with an even bigger heart. He absolutely loves other dogs, especially dogs his own size, and nothing makes him happier than a good game of chase or some rough-and-tumble wrestling with a canine friend. Because he's still young, he's full of energy and doesn't always realize just how big he is. One of Melvin's sweetest qualities is how quickly he bonds with his people. He's a true shadow dog who wants to be wherever you are. Whether you're making dinner, watching TV, or working around the house, you will find a big slobbery face following right behind you. He loves being part of the family and is happiest when he's included. Melvin already has a great foundation for his new family. He's house-trained, crate-trained, and walks nicely on a leash, making the transition into his forever home that much easier. He still has plenty to learn, and needs someone who will teach him. She is already spayed and has had gastropexy surgery done. Athena would benefit from training and would do best with someone who is strong enough for her as she is a leash puller. Found abandoned in Kentucky with his mom                                                   PERSONALITY: Norman is such a sweet, mild-mannered boy. He is still shy when meeting new people and can be fearful of men/reactive to loud noises, but once he knows you, he is a total love bug! Norman thinks that all dogs and cats are just friends he hasn’t met yet, but he also respects when this opinion isn’t reciprocated. Since Norman is still young, he enjoys some bouts of playfulness, but he also enjoys his naps and sleeping in. FAVORITE ACTIVITIES: Carrying around his toys, making new friends, being close to his person/people, and being loved on. MEDICAL ISSUES: No known issues.  WHAT WOULD BE THE BEST KIND OF HOME:  Norman would love to have a home where he gets plenty of love and attention, and hopefully has some four-legged friends to play with.
