Story
Meet Moose! Moose is a handsome guy! He is 3 years old and weighs in at about 10#.
Moose can to us as an owner surrender, after he began lashing out on his family and the other cat in the home. The other cat was bigger and older than him.
We could tell right away something was up with Moose, as unhappy as he was. You see, Moose was front paw declawed as a pretty young boy. Staff noticed right away that his front legs looked different and that he was continuously grooming his front "wrists" and had balding spots where he was licking. We suspected that there was an issue with the declaw that was previously done. Moose was assessed by a veterinarian in March '23, that specializes in helping declawed cats, just like Moose, to see what was going on. Moose doesn't have any leftover shards of nails left where his claws use to be, thankfully! He does however have joint pain in his "wrists" on both front legs. This is caused from a cats normal walking gait, being thrown off by the amputation of each toe on the foot, that can occur over time after a declaw procedure happens. This is equivalent to you having all of your fingertips cut off at the first joint. OUCH!
Moose has become our first kitty ever, to get to try out the new once a month injectable, Solensia, just for cats with osteoarthritis. He isn't the age that you would expect to need to start using something for joint pain, but with the joint pain he is already experiencing before he was even 3 years old, we thought it was in his best interest to give it a try! Moose has shown improvement for sure! He has been with us long enough to have received 7 injections so far. We can say it has definitely made him stop licking his "wrists" and all his hair has grown back on both legs! With that being said, Moose's new owner will need to have a good relationship with a vet that offers Solensia to its cat clients. And an owner who can afford monthly trips to the vet for him to get these injections. We got estimates and after the initial exam and first injection at the vet clinics, its roughly $75 - $100 a month for his injection.
Moose can be grumpy guy, but who can blame him?! However, Moose can also be SO sweet and affectionate! We are hoping to place him in a very quite home, with a single person or older couple. One with NO other pets or children in the home. He does not like dogs and he knows he cannot defend himself from other cats, and acts defensive towards them out of habit and past experience.
We understand it is a longstretch to find a home for Moose, but we will do our best to try to find him one! Moose needs understanding and love, but most of all patience and time. He needs time to let himself trust you and show you affection on his own terms. He does not enjoy being picked up. Moose needs a high sided, extra large, uncovered litter box.
