Story
Cruiser came to Cactus Ranch Rescue from a Houston hoarding situation, where he was one of many dogs living without the individual care, attention, and security he deserved. Now that he is safe, Cruiser is showing us what a happy, playful little guy he truly is. He loves exploring, playing with other animals, and soaking up affection from his people. He has a fun, outgoing personality and brings plenty of puppy energy wherever he goes. Cruiser is friendly with other pets and would be happy sharing his home with animal companions. Like any young dog, he will need patience, structure, and continued training as he learns house manners and settles into family life. This sweet boy has already left his difficult beginning behind. Now he is ready to cruise straight into a forever home filled with love, safety, and adventure.

Story
Meet Pompeii 🐾 Pompeii is a tiny Chiweenie with a BIG personality, an even bigger heart, and absolutely no concept of personal space. 😂 Pompeii came to Cactus Ranch Rescue after his owner experienced a mental health crisis and could no longer care for him. Before coming to us, we were told that Pompeii had been kicked in the face as a puppy, leaving him with a permanent injury to one of his eyes. We had his eye thoroughly evaluated by our veterinarian, and thankfully, the damage is from old trauma. His eye is comfortable, his tear production and staining tests looked good, and he can still see out of it! At this time, there is no reason to remove it. Now that Pompeii has had time to settle into foster care, his REAL personality has arrived — and oh boy, is he a character. 🤣 Pompeii is an incredibly affectionate little guy who wants to be wherever his person is. He has basically zero interest in running away from home because, in his mind, why would he ever willingly leave YOU? He may slip through an open door to follow you, but his entire mission in life is simply to remain attached to his human. He is VERY dog and cat friendly and loves having other animals around. He happily follows the other dogs outside to potty and play, but give him about 15 minutes and he’ll be standing at the door crying because outside is fun… but YOU are inside. 😂 And this boy LOVES to play! He genuinely enjoys toys, playing with his foster siblings, being silly, and finally getting to just be a happy young dog. He is doing fantastic with potty training when given adequate potty breaks. He has had only one pee accident and one poop accident in the house outside of nighttime dribbling. Because he is still young and insists on sleeping in bed under the blankets, his foster puts a little diaper on him overnight when he occasionally tries to hold his bladder longer than he should. He is also pretty good on a leash and continues to improve as he experiences more of the world. Pompeii tends to munch on his kibble mostly at night in his current free-fed foster home. He’s adjusted beautifully to living with other animals and being part of a household. Now, we do need to discuss his understanding of personal boundaries. There is none. Absolutely none. 🤣 If you are looking for a dog who respectfully sleeps at the foot of the bed, Pompeii would like to respectfully decline your application. This child will crawl under your blankets, sleep pressed against you, and potentially wake you up at 3 AM by jumping directly onto your head, pinning you down with both front paws, and aggressively administering kisses. He wants to be held. He wants to snuggle. He wants to play. He wants to follow you to the bathroom. He wants to know why you shut the door. He wants to know why you stopped petting him 4.7 seconds ago. After everything this little guy has experienced, watching him realize that he is safe enough to be goofy, playful, obnoxiously affectionate, and completely himself has been pretty special. Pompeii isn’t looking for someone who simply wants a dog. He’s looking for someone who wants a tiny best friend permanently attached to their hip. ❤️ If you can handle the kisses, the toys, the blanket burrowing, the complete invasion of personal space, and a little face that thinks you are the greatest thing on earth, Pompeii might just be your boy.

Story
Juda is a sweet 1 year old small boy who is all about love, playtime, and belly rubs. Give him a little attention and there’s a very good chance he’ll immediately roll over and ask you to rub that belly. 😂 Juda loves running and playing with other small dogs and would thrive in a home where he has friends to play with, children to love, or both! He has not been tested with large dogs yet. He is wonderful with kids and would probably be thrilled to eventually trade his kennel for sleeping beside one of his favorite humans at night. 💜 He is kennel trained and is still working on polishing up his indoor potty-training skills. He’s an expressive little guy who may bark when he gets excited or whine when he wants affection, but he is not an excessive barker. Cats may be a little more complicated. Juda likes to chase them when they run and may bark at them, so a cat-free home may be easiest. A confident, dog-savvy kitty who isn’t intimidated by his antics could potentially coexist with him with proper introductions. His dream home would have a secure fenced yard where he can zoom around, plenty of attention, and preferably children or another playful small dog to keep him company. And can we talk about that adorable curly tail?! 🥹 More than anything, Juda is an incredibly loving, loyal little dog who becomes deeply attached to the people who show him love. He’s ready to find his people and love them with everything he’s got. 🏡🐾

Meet Mel! Mel is 13 years old, about 6.5 lbs, and every bit the tiny lady. She may act shy for the first few minutes, but once she feels comfortable, her sweet and spunky personality comes right out.Mel loves being included in everyday life. Whether you’re doing dishes, folding laundry, gardening, getting ready for the day, or relaxing on the couch, she is perfectly happy nearby keeping you company. She isn’t overly clingy—she just likes being part of the action and knowing what her humans are up to!One of Mel’s cutest quirks is her little prance. She has a tiny ballerina step and loves dancing her way around the house. She also enjoys sunny afternoons outside, leisurely walks, and exploring new places. At home, she has no problem using couch stairs or hopping onto the back of the couch to keep watch over her kingdom. 👑☀️Mel is good with other dogs and enjoys playing with pups around her own size, although she definitely knows when she has had enough and isn’t afraid to say so! She appreciates having a cozy space of her own where she can nap and recharge. She could happily live with a compatible small dog, but she may secretly enjoy being the center of attention too.She is crate trained, good on a leash, and still working on potty training, but she will let you know when she needs to go outside. Mel can take a little longer to warm up to men, so patience is important while she gets comfortable.Because she enjoys having her space respected, Mel would likely do best with adults or older and respectful children.Mel’s perfect family is simply one that wants a little companion to share life with. Walks, couch time, sunshine, errands, adventures—she is ready for all of it. Give her a little time to settle in, and you’ll have a sweet, loyal bestie who will happily keep all your secrets. 🥹💕To apply to have your home considered for adoption, read about our adoption process or fees, and find out about interstate transport, please visit our website at https://longwayhome.org/adopt.❤ Long Way Home makes no guarantees on breed--most animals we receive from shelters are mixed breeds.

Meet Peppa Pawdu! At 14 years old, Peppa has earned the right to enjoy the finer things in life: sunny spots, leisurely walks, belly rubs, car rides, and plenty of naps.🥹💛Peppa (formerly Erkyah Pawdu) was adopted from our program in 2024, but through no fault of her own, recently found herself back in rescue. While we're sad she's back, her foster family has quickly fallen in love with this sweet senior girl.Peppa is the perfect mix of independent and affectionate. She enjoys having her own space but will happily wander over when she's ready for scratches, belly rubs, and a little extra love. 🥰This sweet girl is hard of hearing, enjoys a slower pace of life, and is happiest in a calm home where she can relax and enjoy her golden years. Like many senior dogs, Peppa has some age-related spinal arthritis, but with her daily medication she's comfortable and happy!💊Peppa's favorite things include: 🐾Her slow walks🚘Car rides🌤Spending time outside🍗 Meal time! She's not a picky girl! Weight management is very important for Peppa for her spinal arthritis! One of her most unique qualities? Her adorable little "yodel." When she thinks she's home alone, she'll occasionally let out a funny howl that's somewhere between a yodel and a conversation. Because of this, she'd thrive in a home where her people are around most of the time or can bring her along on adventures.🏡🚗Peppa gets along with respectful dogs but would likely be happiest as the center of someone's world or with a calm, low-key canine companion. A backyard or doggy door would be a huge bonus since she enjoys frequent trips outside.🐶📍Based in Bryan, Texas. Story
Meet Wylie! 💛Wylie is a 10-year-old, 12 lb sweetheart with the most sensitive little soul. He is super submissive, gentle, and very tuned in to his people!🥹This boy loves affirmations. He will quietly slide up next to you, look into your eyes, and wait for a little reminder that he is safe and loved. When he is unsure, he will pay close attention to your voice and facial expressions, always checking in for reassurance. He can be hesitant with new things at first, but once he understands his routine and knows where his safe place is, he settles in beautifully.💓Wylie has done great sleeping in his pen at night and seems to enjoy having his own private space for eating and resting! He is very much an indoor dog. To Wylie, outside is for potty breaks only — not a grand adventure. He likes to go out, do his business, and come right back inside where he feels secure. 🌤Wylie has adapted well in a foster home with both large and small dogs, but his ideal home would be calm, steady, and consistent. He would thrive with a homebody who enjoys quiet companionship, soft words, and a simple routine.🐾He may bark if startled or if the other dogs start barking, but most of the time he just makes the tiniest little squeaky sound when he gets excited. He also loves going belly up like the goofy little guy he is!😝💊 Wylie is heartworm positive, but LWHA covers his treatment until it is complete. Local Bryan/College Station adopters may take him home during treatment as long as they can get him to his vet appointments. Out-of-area adopters can still apply, but Wylie cannot go home until his treatment is finished.Wylie is easy, gentle, and so deserving of a forever home where he can feel safe, loved, and understood. Story
Some dogs make friends with everyone they meet. Rose is a little different... and that's what makes her so special.Rose doesn't hand out her trust right away. She likes to take her time getting to know new people and appreciates a family that will let her settle in at her own pace. But once you've earned her heart, you'll have a loyal little shadow who wants to be wherever you are!Her favorite place is curled up in your lap, resting at your feet, or keeping you company from across the room. At bedtime, she's perfectly happy snoozing in her cozy dog bed tucked under yours, close enough to know you're nearby.Rose is house trained and gets along well with other dogs, though we think she'd also be perfectly happy soaking up all the attention as an only dog. She enjoys keeping an eye on the neighborhood and may let you know when she spots a cat outside.Because Rose can be sensitive about being handled, she's looking for a home that will respect her boundaries. If she feels overwhelmed or pushed, she may give a warning nip to let you know she's uncomfortable. For that reason, she'd do best in a home with adults or older, dog-savvy children who understand that the best relationships are built on trust, patience, and kindness. The beautiful thing about Rose is that once she decides you're her person, she's all in. Her quiet devotion, sweet companionship, and unwavering loyalty make every bit of that earned trust worthwhile.Rose is currently being fostered in Bryan, Texas, but don't let distance stop you. We offer nationwide transport to the nearest major city at no additional cost, making it easy for the right family to welcome her home, no matter where you live.Nationwide transport available, thanks to our Flight Transport partners with SWATT Transport and that flies in cabin with Southwest AirlinesDog adoptions are $250, and if you need nationwide transport, it's an extra $250 for the flight and all materials needed.
