Story
Uncle Lewis is about 2 years old and 17 lbs! Lewis is a quiet, thoughtful soul who’s spent most of his life fending for himself. Because of that, he’s learned to rely on independence instead of people—and the idea of love and safety is still new to him. But underneath that cautious exterior is a tender heart just waiting for the right person to show him the world isn’t so scary.Lewis feels safest in the company of calm dogs and in the comfort of his kennel, where he can decompress and observe life at his own pace. He has an avoidant attachment style and needs time, patience, and gentle consistency to learn that humans can be kind. Loud voices, sudden movements, or physical corrections would shut him down completely—he needs a home rooted in softness and respect. He’s also a clever little escape artist, always thinking five steps ahead, so his future family will need secure fencing and a watchful eye. Ideally, Lewis would thrive in a home with at least one calm, confident dog to help show him the ropes. Fast, unpredictable things—like a child on a scooter—can overwhelm him, so a quiet, adult-only household would be best. At this time, we’re unsure how he feels about men or cats.Lewis isn’t a “plug-and-play” dog—he’s a healing heart looking for a patient guide. But for the person willing to meet him where he is, the reward will be watching a once-fearful pup slowly bloom into a dog who finally knows what it means to feel safe.Could you be the gentle home Uncle Lewis has been waiting for?To apply to have your home considered for adoption, read about our adoption process or fees, and find out about interstate transport, please visit our website at https://longwayhome.org/adopt.❤ Long Way Home makes no guarantees on breed--most animals we receive from shelters are mixed breeds.

Story
Meet Puddles!Puddles is an 8-year-old, 13-pound little lovebug who is searching for a calm, patient forever home where she can finally feel safe and settled.Puddles originally entered our program in February and was recently adopted, but she was returned because her anxiety proved to be more than her adopter was prepared to manage. She is now back with her foster family, where she is safe and loved, but we know she is ready to find someone who truly understands her needs and is committed to helping her feel secure. At heart, Puddles is an affectionate little snuggle bug who wants nothing more than to be close to her person. Her favorite place is curled up underneath a blanket, tucked beside someone she trusts, and snoozing the day away. She forms strong bonds with her people and would love a home where she can spend plenty of time near them.Puddles thrives in a calm, predictable environment. She can become nervous when things are loud, busy, or chaotic, so she would do best with a family who can provide her with consistency, reassurance, and a peaceful routine. She does well with respectful children, although she may bark if the activity level becomes overwhelming. She can live with other dogs, but she is most comfortable around dogs who are submissive, calm, and low-energy. Cats are not a good match for Puddles because she enjoys chasing small critters and would do best in a cat-free home.Puddles has IVDD, but she still enjoys short walks, fresh air, and especially stroller rides. She may not be very interested in toys, but she loves chewing on bones and is known to be a sneaky little food thief, so keep an eye on your snacks!Puddles currently takes Fluoxetine and Trazodone as needed to help manage her anxiety. She is also continuing to work on crate training. She may cry for approximately 20 minutes after her person leaves, but once she realizes she is safe, she is usually able to settle. She is still working on her potty training, and doggy diapers can be a helpful management tool. Her future family should also understand that when her anxiety increases, her potty habits may worsen temporarily. She will need someone who can respond with patience, consistency, and compassion rather than frustration.Puddles is not looking for a perfect home—just the right one. She needs someone who understands that progress may take time and who will not give up on her when she feels nervous or uncertain. In return, Puddles will give you endless cuddles, loyal companionship, and the sweetest little shadow you could ask for. All she really wants is a cozy blanket, a peaceful home, and a person who will love her through the hard days as much as the easy ones.Could Puddles be the calm, cuddly companion you have been searching for?Visit our website at www.longwayhome.org/adopt to apply! To apply to have your home considered for adoption, read about our adoption process or fees, and find out about interstate transport, please visit our website at https://longwayhome.org/adopt.❤ Long Way Home makes no guarantees on breed--most animals we receive from shelters are mixed breeds.

Story
Tali never imagined she'd be searching for a new family. She spent her entire life with the people she loved, but when her family had to move, they could no longer keep her. Through no fault of her own, this sweet girl found herself starting over. It's a big change for any dog, but Tali has handled it with the same quiet, gentle spirit that makes everyone who meets her fall in love.If you're looking for a calm, low-maintenance companion, Tali may be your perfect match. She's incredibly laid back, rarely makes a peep, and is happiest spending her days napping nearby or simply enjoying your company. She gets along beautifully with people, other dogs, and even cats, making her an easy addition to just about any home.Tali does have a heart murmur and takes a daily heart medication, which she happily eats mixed into a little canned food. She doesn't mind her routine one bit and continues to enjoy life at her own relaxed pace. She's also still working on house training. Tali faithfully goes outside first thing in the morning with the other dogs, but she still has occasional accidents during the day. With patience, consistency, and lots of encouragement, she'll continue making progress.Tali isn't flashy or demanding. She's simply a kind soul looking for a soft place to land and someone to love. After losing the only home she'd ever known, we'd love nothing more than to see her spend the rest of her life feeling safe, cherished, and home again.Tali is currently being fostered in Bryan, Texas, but don't let distance stop you. We offer nationwide transport to the nearest major city at no additional cost, making it easy for the right family to welcome her home, no matter where you live.Nationwide transport available, thanks to our Flight Transport partners with SWATT Transport and that flies in cabin with Southwest AirlinesDog adoptions are $250, and if you need nationwide transport, it's an extra $250 for the flight and all materials needed.
