Story
Rupert is back in the hamster rescue after being adopted multiple times and returned each time. Why is he being returned? The short answer is he is a hyperactive GSP. The long answer is just about every human being who has taken responsibility for him gives up on him, including a few trainers, and this is dating all the way back to when he was just a few months old and dumped on someone’s property which is how he came into our hamster rescue to begin with. So… is he a lost cause at this point? We are choosing to believe he’s not. Here are the positive things about Rupert: He is up to date on vaccines, neutered, crate trained, does okay with most dogs and has lived with cats, is house trained with a dog door present, is not a barker, LOVES car rides and the outdoors, has endless energy and isn’t afraid of people despite most of them letting him down; he knows no strangers and everyone he sees is instantly a friend. Rupert actually likes baths and water in general for that matter. If he is properly exercised for a few hours daily, he will then sprawl out wherever he drops and sleep soundly and his behavior in the house is tolerable. Now for the difficult aspects of this poor dog nobody can commit to permanently. Rupert has a high prey drive outdoors in that anything that moves he chases, from butterflies and grasshoppers to lizards, birds and small ground animals, nothing is safe if it moves. He has been described by one adopter as “too scatterbrained without any real focus on reality". As far as training goes, Rupert knows basic commands, but only performs them if he feels like it, which is usually never. At times he walks on the leash well, but not always. If no dog door is present, he’ll pee on the floor, in his crate or on a human’s bed/couch, he cares not where he relieves himself. If Rupert is not properly exercised daily, he’ll begin destroying things. At this point in his profile most people will probably close it out, and that is fine. We don’t want anyone to apply to adopt him because he’s cute. Rupert needs a solid pack leader who has dealt with high energy breeds before and knows how to curtail the energy in a positive manner. Our hope is the next human who takes Rupert into their home will commit to him indefinitely. GSP’s are not the type of dogs who become man’s best friend, instead they’ll claim your world as their own, and allow you to exist in it.
