Story
Piper is a beautiful nine-year-old Labrador/Greyhound/Shepherd who weighs about 70 pounds. She is a sweet, well-trained dog who loves people and thrives on close companionship. Piper’s favorite place is right beside her humans, curled into her signature “donut” shape. One of Pipers favourite enrichment activities is a snifari; she will wait patiently in another room while treats are hidden around the house, then eagerly search them out with focus and determination. She also enjoys long, slow walks where she can stop and sniff everything along the way. Piper's ears are expert level alert - especially when it comes to cucumber slices - and it's rumoured she can hear one being cut from anywhere in the house! Piper is housetrained and used to apartment living, doing all her toileting on leash walks. She is calm when left alone during the workday and does not bark or become destructive. She is comfortable with baths, brushing, nail trims, grooming visits, and vet care. She knows several commands including sit, down, come, stay, off, and paw. She walks nicely on leash but is reactive to other dogs when they are within about 15–20 feet, a behaviour that developed after a negative dog park experience years ago. Her family manages this by keeping distance and avoiding close encounters. Piper is friendly and excited to greet adult visitors, though she may bark briefly at the door before settling quickly. Piper does best in a calm, adult-only home without other animals. She is very uncomfortable around young children and has shown increased anxiety and barking when exposed to them. Her experience with cats is unknown, though she may have a high prey drive. In the car, she can be anxious, pacing and whining, and she has had motion sickness on longer trips. Piper is healthy and up to date on vet care. She does receive a fiber supplement to support her anal glands. What Piper needs most is a quiet, stable home where she can feel safe and included. She is loyal, silly, and deeply affectionate, waiting for her perfect someone to hit the adopt button and sign up for all the unconditional love they could hope for. Obtained From: Rehomed from another home at about 1 year old. Reason for Intake: Piper is not comfortable around toddlers Up to Date with Vetting Dogs: She is reactive to other dogs on leash closer than 15-20 feet. She has had very little experience with dogs in the past 5-6 years. When they first got her she did go to the dog park but was attacked there. Cats: Unknown but she has a high prey drive. Kids: She has very little experience with children. Previous owner cottaged for 3 days with children under 10 years old and after about 24 hours she seemed to become more concerned with them and started barking and reacting to them especially when her owners were engaged with the kids. Resource guarding issues: Not from people. Unknown with other animals. Car rides: She is anxious in the car and paces and whines. She has had motion sickness in the past on longer trips. She has been left alone for a full work day. They live in an apartment and have not had noise complaints. She has not been crated since they initially got her 7-8 years ago. Energy Level: Medium Leash skills: She walks well on leash. After training, she is reactive to dogs closer than about 20 feet. They typically cross the street when they see other dogs and they do not meet other dogs on walks. She does not show concern with people, vehicles, etc. on walks. Okay with physical handling/manipulations: Yes. They can bathe her, brush her, and trim her nails. She is professionally groomed every couple of months and is good at the groomer. She is fine being handled at the vet. She has been boarded by Rover providers and done well in those homes. Food on now: Fromm kibble. 1 cup, 2x/day. Behavioural issues: She is reactive to other dogs on leash closer than about 20 feet now. She has shown similar reactive behaviour with young children when staying with them.
