You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.*** Check Out My Video Album Below! *** Meet Marie, a beautiful example of the classic Great Pyrenees look shrunk down into a "Pocket Pyr" package. Marie came to rescue after being found chained to a house in Alabama, and that hard start has left her with a fear of people. It takes patience to earn her trust - approaching slowly, bending down, hands out, and speaking in a soft voice - but once she settles, she melts into pets and hugs and clearly craves connection. She isn't yet socialized enough for formal obedience training, but she knows "go outside," "go potty," and "come.” She's a low-activity girl who prefers being indoors, doesn't bark, and doesn't dig. That said, she would love a secure, 5-foot fenced yard to enjoy with a doggie friend. Marie gets along fine with cats and currently shares her foster home with 2 dogs - a 5-pound Shih Tzu and a 100-pound male Great Pyrenees, doing wonderfully with both. In fact, she needs a male Pyr companion in her next home. When she first arrived in foster care, she ran straight to the resident big boy and has stuck by his side ever since, drawing real comfort and confidence from him. Among her favorite things are car rides, where she's an excellent passenger, and being brushed and petted once she's calm and settled. While she’s easily spooked by people, she’s proven to be a good client with the groomer, who reports that she does well there. Marie likely knows that tasty rewards of bacon treats and cheese will soon be delivered! A couple of her endearing quirks: she'll only eat while lying in her bed rather than walking over to a bowl, and she prefers to drink water when no one is in the room. Marie’s ideal home is with adults who have experience with easily spooked dogs and have successfully worked through that kind of fear before. They should bring an abundance of patience and calm voices to the table, and hopefully work from home. It will take months for her to fully acclimate, and she'll need people who don't expect too much too soon. But she is trying, every day, to overcome her nervousness - and that effort is part of what makes her so special. She is deeply loving and clearly longs to give and receive love, even though it's still hard for her right now. Her foster mom calls her Marie Laveau, after the magical woman of New Orleans, because she believes the magic in her will shine through for the right family willing to wait for it. Fencing: Secure VISIBLE fencing is required; invisible fencing WILL NOT contain this breed. Fees: Adoption fees are determined on a sliding scale depending on age, location and transport. Transport costs are included in the adoption fee. Fees for dogs adopted locally start at $400 and can range up to $700 for puppies under six months. Puppies placed on spay/neuter contracts receive $100 back when the dog is spayed or neutered. Fees for senior dogs (7 or older) and foster dogs will be adjusted accordingly. Key considerations are: 1) the experience of the applicant with large breed dogs 2) children in the household or regularly visiting the household are ready for a large-breed dog who is a guardian by nature and 3) the sex of other dogs currently residing in the household to avoid same-sex aggression issues.
