Story
Smokey will be coming to the shelter Jan 17🐾 Meet Smokey 🐾Smokey is a 1-year-old Black Lab/Shepherd mix (about 60 lbs) who is looking for a new home. His owner recently had a stroke and can no longer handle his strength, which is why he needs to be rehomed.Smokey is a very sweet, playful boy. He loves to play ball, run around, give kisses, and soak up attention. He’s crate trained, house trained, and will bark when he needs to go outside. He does well being left alone for a few hours and settles in his crate.✨ What Smokey Needs:He would do best with older kids and that is ONLY because the owners have never had him around younger children. He has been around other dogs but can be picky, so slow introductions are best.A family who will play with him and give him the attention he loves.Smokey is a really good dog with lots of love and energy to share. He just needs a fresh start with someone who can keep up with him.📍 Garrett, IN📞 Contact Janet at 260-609-5401 or Paul at 260-308-8118An adoption application can be filled out on the DHS website https://www.dekalbhumanesociety.org/adopt. 💙 Meet Blue — Ready for His Fresh Start! 💙Blue is a 2-year-old charcoal Lab with soulful amber eyes, a goofy personality, and a heart full of love. He’s now at the shelter, neutered and up to date on vaccinations, and ready to find the family he’s been waiting for.Blue is a fun-loving, affectionate boy who enjoys staying active and being close to his people. He has a joyful spirit, loves to explore, and brings plenty of personality wherever he goes. Whether he’s zooming around with a toy or soaking up attention, Blue makes it clear how much he enjoys life and companionship. What makes Blue special:• House-trained and uses a bell to ask to go outside• Knows commands and enjoys learning, especially with tasty treats• Very affectionate, cuddly, and people-oriented• Playful, goofy, and full of charm• Does well with children• Loves toys, zoomies, hugs, and quality time with his people• Loves water — splashing, wading, and getting wet — but needs a little help when it comes to swimming (life jacket recommended for this enthusiastic-but-not-quite-Michael-Phelps pup 😄)Blue thrives with routine, enrichment, and positive guidance, and he’s eager to continue learning in a home that enjoys engaging with their dog. He would love a space where he can stretch his legs, play, and relax with his family afterward. At his core, Blue is a sweet, friendly dog who wants connection. He’ll happily follow you around, greet you with enthusiasm, and settle in close when it’s time to relax. He’s the kind of companion who wants to be part of your day and your heart. If you’re looking for a loyal, loving dog with a big personality and even bigger potential, Blue would love to meet you.📍 Blue is currently at DeKalb Humane Society📞 Interested adopters can fill out an adoption application on our websiteBlue is ready to start his next chapter — splashes, cuddles, and all. 💙An adoption application can be filled out on the DHS website https://www.dekalbhumanesociety.org/adopt. Story
🌸 Meet Nia — the Little Heart Who Just Needs Time 🌸Nia is a petite 1-year-old mixed-breed sweetheart who came to us from an accidental litter, and because she didn’t get much early socialization, the big world is still a pretty scary place for her. Meeting new people is hard, new environments are overwhelming, and she’s looking for someone who understands that trust takes time. But here’s the beautiful part: once Nia lets you in, she loves you with her whole heart. She becomes your shadow, your cheerleader, your snuggle buddy, and your very best friend.Nia is fully vetted, young, smart, and so ready to bloom — she just needs a patient, gentle human who can help her build confidence at her own pace. A quiet home, a calm routine, and someone who celebrates small wins will help her shine. If you’re the kind of person who finds joy in helping a fearful dog feel safe, Nia will repay you with loyalty like no other. She’s not the dog who runs to new people… but she is the dog who will love you deeply once she knows she can.Give her time, give her patience — and she’ll give you her whole heart. 🖤An adoption application can be filled out on the DHS website https://www.dekalbhumanesociety.org/adopt. Dog adoption fees are $200.00 for all puppies and adult dogs. Seniors are a donation of choice.Cats and kittens are a donation of choice.
