Hi, I’m Poppy! I’m a 2-year-old spayed Golden Retriever/Great Pyrenees mix, and I’m looking for a special family who understands that sometimes a girl like me needs a little more than love — I need guidance, consistency and someone I can trust to lead the way. I was adopted as an adorable little puppy by a wonderful family who loved me very much. What they didn’t realize was just how BIG I was going to get! They weren’t very experienced dog owners, and while I had lots of love, I didn’t have quite enough direction. Some dogs are perfectly happy making their own decisions. Me? I found that responsibility a little overwhelming. Without someone showing me what was expected of me, I became protective of the things I considered mine — my food, water, bedding and kennel. If someone entered my space, I would bark and lunge to tell them to back off. I have never bitten anyone, but I learned to use my size and my voice when I felt unsure. Then the people here started showing me that I didn’t have to be in charge. Over the past few weeks, they have given me the structure and guidance I was missing. With consistency, patience and gentle authority, I have absolutely flourished! Instead of feeling like I have to make all the decisions, I’m learning that I can relax and trust my people to take care of things. And you know what? I really like it that way. Now I’m looking for an experienced dog family who understands a dog like me — a girl who is much happier at the back of the pack, with a confident and kind person leading the way. My new family will need to continue the work that has been started here, give me clear and consistent boundaries, and be patient with me while I learn the rules of my new home. In return, you’ll get a beautiful girl who has already shown us just how much she can grow when someone takes the time to understand what she needs. My adoption fee is $300.
