Meet Chai, the mixed breed. We are taking a wild guess that she is a Lowchen mix based off of her looks.. but it is simply a guess! Chai came to the Shelter after her previous guardian was unable to continue caring for her. She can be a little reserved when first meeting people but after a few minutes, warms up and solicits attention. As a bit of an undersocialized dog, Chai would thrive with a dog-savvy adopter that will take her transition to the new home nice and slow. Her adopters should have patience to work with her on all things – potty training, leash walking and age appropriate socialization. She has experience around 6 and 8 year old children but sometimes jumps on them in excitement. Sturdy children in the home may be a fit. Chai has some experience around an elderly dog in her previous home. Any resident dogs should meet at the Shelter prior to adoption. We do not have any history of Chai with cats. Adopters for Chai should be aware that she will need regular grooming – brushing daily and/or professional grooming on a regular schedule. Chai is available for pre-adoption. Come meet her, fall in love and take her home after her spay surgery. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw!Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week. Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Looks like: Maltese, Terrier mix Male, 12 years old (estimated), 5 pounds Adventure is out there! And Carl is ready to find his! Named after the beloved grumpy-but-sweet gentleman from Up, our Carl is a much smaller and considerably fluffier version, but he shares one very important quality with his namesake: he's a wonderful old soul with a whole lot of heart. Carl is a sweet, gentle, and genuinely nice little guy who seems to appreciate the simple things in life. He's easygoing and affectionate, with the kind of calm presence that makes you want to scoop him up and take him home. Carl isn't looking for a life filled with wild adventures these days. His idea of a perfect day is likely something a little more relaxed, some gentle exploring, plenty of cozy time with his people, and knowing he has a soft place to land at the end of the day. This little gentleman has so much love left to give, and we'd love to see him spend his golden years surrounded by people who appreciate what makes senior dogs so special. Little Carl joins us from San Jose Animal Care And Services after he was found as a stray.

Looks like: Terrier mix Male, 7 years old (estimated), 13 pounds Woody is one revved-up little Terrier mix who is always ready to hit the road and see where the day takes him! This handsome guy is a busybody in the very best way! He loves having places to go, things to sniff, and important neighborhood business to attend to. He's excellent on leash and absolutely loves a good sniff around the block. With Woody along for the ride, you'll never have to wonder what's happening in the neighborhood! He's also fantastic with other dogs, making him a great little cruising companion for canine friends. And while he's always on the go, Woody definitely knows how to shift gears. Once the exploring is done, he's happy to park himself next to his person for some sweet snuggles and affection. Woody came to the shelter in pretty rough shape, severely matted and neglected. But this little guy hasn't let a few potholes along the way dampen his spirits. Sweet Woody came to us from Los Banos Animal Services after he was found as a stray. Due to his senior status and their full shelter, they felt he would do best to find his forever home with the POMDR pack.

She gets along beautifully with other dogs and cats, and her gentle energy makes her a joy to be around. If you're looking for a lovable sidekick who will warm your heart, make you laugh, and remind you daily that joy has no limits -Bumper Car is your girl. Bumper Car came to us from the Sacramento Animal Shelter after being found as a stray, but you'd never guess her past by her joyful spirit. She's already left the shelter life in her past and is ready to settle into a forever home where she'll be cherished for the sweet little treasure she is.
