Story
For Adoption: Mozart! Please read our dog bios carefully to be sure that the dog you are applying for suits your family and lifestyle. We at PDR believe in the benefits of post-adoption training for our dogs and their families. This allows for continued socialization, learning and helps to create a well-mannered and balanced dog. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process. To apply for adoption and for more information on our process and requirements, visit our website at https://pounddog.ca/adoption-info/. Mozart is a lively Miniature Schnauzer cross with personality to spare; he’s nine years old but no one seems to have told him that! His zest for life shows no signs of slowing down as he’s always up for any activity, whether that’s a walk, a bit of training, or just a short car ride. Mozart is 17lbs and quite the little athlete who has yet to meet a couch or bed that he can’t launch himself onto (in order to find the perfect napping spot). Mozart was rescued from a shelter in Quebec where he was at risk after his previous family had to surrender him. He was named by his previous family and while we don’t have a lot of information about that previous life, it does seem he has an appreciation for classical music as it helped him stay calm in the early days with his foster. There’s also a chance he may be bilingual as he seems to respond to some commands ‘en francais’ . Mozart is very happy to be outside and active, he instantly perks up when the leash comes out and he has been going for twice a day walks around the neighbourhood but will also happily go on longer adventures (up to 5km so far), as long as the weather cooperates. He is excited and engaged on walks, wanting to smell everything and meet everyone. His enthusiasm will benefit from further leash training as he can react to sudden movements or unexpected people and dogs. It should be noted that his reactivity is not aggression based, but rather over excitement. That being said, other dogs don’t necessarily know how to react to this barking and sometimes jumping on leash, so it is best he does not meet dogs when in this overstimulated state. At this point, he has not been introduced to other dogs, and we will be looking for a home where he will be the only dog so that his manners can be worked on consistently over time. His foster Mom has been working on this diligently with him and has made great progress in helping him improve this behaviour. Mozart is super smart and eager to please, he just needs calm, consistent, clear guidance to help him to continue to improve in his new forever home. Mozart does feel the cold and this winter has required finding indoor spaces to help him expend some energy. He is very alert and aware of noise, so he would do best in a detached house as he may respond to noises that could come through a shared wall or hallway. He’s also working on meeting other dogs and would benefit from a private yard as he continues to work on his confidence in this area. Mozart loves to have a task, job, or puzzle to solve - he’s very smart and this energy does best when it can be redirected to something productive. His bright intelligent eyes light up when a treat puzzle comes out and he has mastered several of them over the last few weeks. Treats are also key to his crate time, he will go in without complaint and enjoy his snacks, but if he knows someone is home, he won’t hesitate to let you know he’d like to come say hi. He can manage overnight and daytime stretches (and will occasionally put himself in the crate for some quiet time), but would usually rather be on the comfy couch, when allowed. Mozart had been using pee pads in those last days with his previous family and while he’s taken quickly to house training, he has had a small number of accidents, primarily when he’s been excited and distracted. Regular outside time and walks will continue to put him on the right path. Mozart has done a number of car rides (short and long) and handles them incredibly well; he hops into the back seat of the car excited about whatever adventure is coming next. Mozart’s wavy white coat is low shedding, but he will still need professional grooming to keep it clear of mats and tangles. He is calm in the bath and will tolerate brushing. Mozart can be very quiet, but he also likes to communicate and will let you know if there’s an unknown sound or person within earshot. His curiosity kicks in and he’ll share a couple of barks to alert anyone around. He can usually be quieted down but will benefit from confidence building that allows him to feel calm through any disturbances. Mozart also loves to chase after squeaky toys or make some noise doing his puzzles. He has been caught sneaking socks if he feels he’s gone through all of the other toys, but he reacts very well to having these taken away. While Mozart knows how to play hard, he also loves to relax hard and makes a point of positioning himself close by to his foster while he catches up on his sleep. At night, when it’s time to wind down, he is first onto the couch and often wants to snuggle right in, doing his best to make sure his whole body is touching yours. He’s very content to spend some time snoozing away and won’t say no to a belly or ear rub. Mozart has been fostered in a quiet home with no other pets or kids, but when he has met young kids, he’s done very well with them, seeing opportunities for more games and play. Mozart would do best in a home with children over the age of 10 who can be patient with an enthusiastic new family member who is still learning his manners. Potential adopters will need to consider how they can support him in further socialization and learning proper etiquette for meeting new friends. Mozart has shown he can be a quick learner and seems to enjoy training; he’s been working on a number of commands that can be helpful on walks or around new people. He’ll do best with a family who can keep him engaged and provide him with opportunities to keep busy. Mozart is up to date on all of his vaccinations and received a clean bill of health from the vet. He had his teeth examined and it was determined he didn’t need dental work, but anyone interested in adopting a dog at this age will need to plan for potential dental work in the future. As most older dogs do, Mozart has a couple lumps and bumps, but the vet has noted them as benign lipomas. He handled his vet visits very well and was clearly used to that environment. Mozart is young at heart companion and his vim and vigor approach to life is nicely balanced by his desire to cuddle in close when it’s time to relax for the night. His bright personality is sure to bring a spark to any home.
