(For more pics, visit nr2r.petfinder.com or www.RoadtoRescueLA.org)   INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLY: PLEASE read profile thoroughly BEFORE applying: DOG APPLICATION LINK:    http://www.roadtorescuela.org/dog-application Monia (female) Intake date:   7/10/2024 Pekingese mix Approx 4 years old 11.2 pounds Adoption fee:  $350, which includes vetting, microchip Benefactor Dog:  When we have a popular dog, we dub them a “Benefactor Dog”.  A Benefactor Dog will have an above average adoption fee.  In other words, for OTHER dogs where the adoption fee is minimal or waived due to age, health or some other reason (although we’ve likely spent hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars) a Benefactor dog will help us somewhat make up the shortfall.  If this dog has an above-average adoption fee, she/he is a Benefactor Dog.   Good with other dogs:  yes Cats:  unknown – we do not have cats to be able to test Vetting and other:  altered (spayed/neutered), cherry eye removed (right eye), up-to-date on age-appropriate vaccinations, heartworm *positive – read heartworm positive paragraph below, fecal negative, 6 month Proheart injection (heartworm prevention), on monthly flea/tick prevention, microchipped Health issues:  heartworm *positive Temperament:  very sweet, social and friendly, submissive as well, laid-back temperament Energy level:  low-medium Groom needs:  High;  requires regular professional grooming, along with intermittent brushing to avoid matting Biography:  This sweet dog was found in the garage of a house off of Drexel in Shreveport.  She was posted on social media and headed to animal control when the public asked the lady to contact us.  She did and we took her in.  We DID notify Caddo Parish Animal Services that we have the dog and they registered her into their system but no one ever came forward.    She was heavily matted with feces, and she had a cherry eye that was likely irritating her as she had scratch marks above her eye.  She has some missing hair due to the fleas and matting but her coat is growing back in beautifully.  She’s a sweet girl who just didn’t have the right home.  That’s all changed now.  She’s going to make someone very happy that is guaranteed!   *Heartworm POSITIVE:   Don’t let heartworms discourage you from adopting a heartworm positive dog! We have tons of examples of dogs adopted and then ultimately testing heartworm negative following our instructions!  MONIA is on (or has completed) twice a day Doxycycline for 30 days, and he/she has received a 6 month Proheart injection. The Proheart injection releases heartworm prevention into their system continuously for 6 months as opposed to the MONTHLY pill which releases prevention only when first administered. Coupled with Doxycycline, the gentle kill (or slow-kill) method is a safer alternative to the harsh immiticide (arsenic) treatment. The Doxycycline kills bacteria, which heartworms thrive on, thus weakening the heartworms and eventually they will die off, but it could take months and possibly up to two years before (s)he will be heartworm free. The 6 month Proheart injection kills any heartworm larvae and sterilizes the adult heartworms so they no longer reproduce. While the “gentle kill” or “slow kill” method does take longer than traditional harsh veterinary treatment, we prefer this method because there is less risk, it is not as harsh on the dog and the dog does not have to be confined for up to two months during the treatment. We recommend the dog receives another 30 day course of Doxycycline when s(he) receives their next Proheart injection (6 months from the first injection). After one year, we recommend the dog be retested for heartworms.  If positive, continue the Doxycycline every 6 months along with the Proheart injection.  If negative, continue with regular heartworm prevention (Proheart injection or monthly pill or topical) just like you would do for any heartworm negative dog.  If negative, discontinue the Doxycycline regimen.  We do require that any interested adopters understand heartworms. They must also agree to continue our method of treatment or, if they wish, they can opt for traditional veterinary treatment; however they cannot choose to do nothing and we do require an agreement/contract be signed that the adopter will continue with a plan to rid him/her of the heartworms. We highly recommend that you discuss this with your veterinarian BEFORE applying (better yet, show this write-up to your vet) as some vets will ONLY do the traditional veterinary treatment... (For more pics, visit nr2r.petfinder.com or www.RoadtoRescueLA.org)   INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLY: PLEASE read profile thoroughly BEFORE applying: DOG APPLICATION LINK:    http://www.roadtorescuela.org/dog-application Priya (female) Intake date:   6/16/2024 Pekingese mix DOB 10/8/2018 15.10 (low-rider) pounds Adoption fee:  $250, which includes vetting, microchip Good with other dogs:  yes Cats:  unknown – we do not have cats to be able to test Vetting and other:  altered (spayed/neutered), up-to-date on age-appropriate vaccinations, heartworm negative, fecal negative, CBC (bloodwork done – everything normal); cytopoint injection for itchy skin; on monthly flea/tick and heartworm prevention, microchipped (NOTE:  When we initially sent her to the vet, they indicated she was running a fever possibly due to pyometra – which is infection of the uterus, so they would not do a rabies and noted to come back in a week.  What was odd is that the former owner indicated she was already spayed, so we were very confused.  Nevertheless, we sent her back the following week AND we talked to the vet tech about our concerns.  When she went back, she was running a fever again.  Nothing made sense… bloodwork was normal… white blood count in normal range, etc.  The tech put her in a kennel for her to calm down.  The car ride made her very nervous and she was panting heavily when she came in.  After some time, she took her out of the kennel and took her temp again and it was normal.  So, they gave her a rabies and of course, no pyometra because she IS spayed.  Having said that, when Priya gets excited or nervous it tends to raise her body temperature but it’s nothing to be concerned about so long as whatever is making her nervous doesn’t last long or she’s made to feel comfortable again.) Health issues:  none found – just keep an eye on her during times of stress (such as vet visits, etc.) Temperament:  very sweet – watch her video.  She is cautious at first but this girl is a sweetheart. Energy level:  low-medium Groom needs:  High;  requires regular grooming/brushing – possibly a professional groom from time-to-time. Biography:  Priya is an owner surrender.  The family is going through some life altering changes.  Here’s what her former owner had to say about her:  She’s only known one home. She is used to staying home alone while owner was at work for about 8 hours during the week. She is friendly and social once she’s comfortable. She slept in the bed with the owner or on the couch. She does get nervous on car rides (thus the whole fever thing indicated above). She hadn’t ever been on a leash while with the former owner, but we’ve been walking her and she does fine. She doesn’t know any commands but she is responsive. She barks during fireworks (don’t blame her). She will eat Christmas lights and plastic (we haven’t had any issues with her being destructive at the rescue). She does fine during grooms. She is a lap dog and loves attention. Energy level:  medium Groom needs:  High;  requires regular brushing and grooming – he will mat up easily Biography:  Hobbes came from a municipal shelter.  He has a story to tell but it is sensitive in nature, and we cannot post publicly.  What we can say is that he is a double-barrel pistol!  There is just something so comical about a dog that appears to be arguing with you or talking back.  His video shows that side of him.  LOL!  Around here, we love a Pekingese.  They just have the most entertaining personalities.  Hobbes does well in a kennel if needed and walks ok on a leash.  He’s a flat-faced toot that will give any home much-needed excitement!  Ideally, he’d like a home with someone who will challenge his daily commentaries, send him to law school and pay of his student loans.  Not much to ask.  If you you’re looking for your next college kid, we welcome your application.  At least this one doesn’t have laundry for you to do! Flat-faced (Brachycephalic) dogs and over-heating:  Brachycephalic dogs are prone to overheating and heatstroke, as their facial conformation prohibits effective cooling. Short-faced dogs should stay cool during hot weather, opting for exercise during early mornings and after the sun goes down rather than during the hottest part of the day.
