He is on a journey to reclaim his homeland and finally find that furever home that he has been searching for his whole life. Thorin is a strikingly handsome long-haired Pembroke Corgi (often called a fluffy Corgi) who is approaching his 2nd birthday! If you have been looking for this breed, then read along to see if you might be the place that he can call home! Weighing in at a whopping 30lbs, this handsome boy is likely at his peak size and is very sturdy. He has striking brown eyes and a beautiful long haired tri colour coat. He came to us from a commercial breeding operation as part of an unsold and then unwanted litter. Due to this he spent his almost entire 2 years of life in a kennel environment so we are teaching him all about the world around him. Thorin is equal parts brave and timid. New things scare him initially, but then when he realized that these things are actually fun, or not dangerous, he is all in and ready to go. Thorin would benefit from a confident handler who can guide him in these new experiences so he can be a confident boy for the rest of his days. Thorin absolutely loves his people, and he wants to be with his people whenever he can. He wholeheartedly believes that he is a lap dog, and will attempt to get into your lap to be as close to you as possible. From day one, Thorin has not shown any fear from people, but he will become submissive if someone approaches him too soon. So best to keep introductions to new people at a slow pace to keep building his confidence with new people. Thorin is a typical Corgi in that he has those short stubby legs, because of this he can’t, nor should he be, jumping on and off a couch by himself. We like to lift him up for couch snuggles, or you can get yourself a nice set of doggie stairs or a ramp so that he can get up whenever he would like to! Thorin is completely crate trained and is very quiet when in his crate. He doesn’t always go in on his own, and sometimes needs just a little boost as a reminder to go on in. He is crated whenever we aren’t home and at night. He sleeps the whole night through, and is generally quiet during the day. Occasionally Thorin is also crate while we are home if we are busy with something and can’t keep eyes on him, he does extremely well in these situations and doesn’t let out a peep. When it comes to house training, overall Thorin is doing extremely well. He came from a place where he was likely able to pee whenever he wanted, and given he is a mature male he did have a tendency to mark when we first brought him home. Since he has been neutered this has decreased dramatically, and we are always watching him so that when we see signs we can get him outside, or correct him as necessary. His forever home will need to remain diligent with him, and he will settle in quite well with house training. Thorin has been able to do the stairs in our home without issue, though sometimes as he approaches them he needs an extra second just to get himself prepared for the descent, and then goes up and down beautifully. Thorin would do well in many housing situations. A house with a fenced backyard would be really nice as he does love to run and sniff freely in the yard and play, but he does prefer if his humans are outside with him. Given that, he would do equally well in a home without a fenced yard and going for walks and hikes as his exercise. Thorin is doing extremely well on leash and he absolutely loves going for walks, initially walks were quite scary and he would run in circles or do some alligator rolls, but once he realized how much fun walks are, he became an excellent walker. He doesn’t seem too bothered when we see other dogs or wildlife, but if another dog is barking at him he does tend to slow down so that he can further assess the situation. Overall Thorin seems unbothered by vehicles passing him and is not concerned with other humans out for their walks either. Overall Thorin is generally very quiet, he’s only barked a few times and that is when he was unable to get close enough to his humans. We have not heard him bark when in his crate, and because of this we do feel that he could be suitable for housing situations which share walls. Thorin is being fostered with other dogs, from day one he has had no issues with any of the dogs and is happy to just hang out. He is not the kind of dog that likes to seek out play from other dogs, but could co-exist with another dog who is also happy to enjoy their own space. Thorin would also do really well as an only dog, as he would love to have all of the attention to himself. Thorin has a cat in the home, and has not shown any interest, however our cat is very dog savvy. I would suggest any cat in the home be a dog savvy cat. Thorin will happily play on his own with some fun squeaky or crinkly toys, and also loves to chew on a good nylabone. Thorin is very affectionate and good natured and could share his home with gentle natured children over the age of 5yrs old. A chaotic, loud home would be overwhelming for Thorin but quieter kids who would enjoy puppy kisses, petting him and playing with him would be nice for Thorin. Thorin has been on a few car rides with us, and he has either been in his crate, or he has been secured to a back seat. Either way, Thorin travels extremely well and managed a 4 hour drive with ease. I would suggest keeping him crated when travelling alone, but having him tethered in the backseat is suitable if you have a passenger that can assist if needed. Thorin is very food motivated, but initially when he gets into a new environment it takes him some time before he can settle and take a treat from you. When taking him to training classes, don’t be discouraged. Lots of pets and praise at the beginning, and midway through the class he will be settled enough to start working for treats! This will of course get easier as the classes go on and he becomes more confident and familiar. Training him with positive reinforcement with praise and treat rewards works really well for him. He will take to training well, he is a very smart little dog. True to his herding breed nature, he loves to work, wants to please and loves learning new things. Anyone interested in Thorin needs to be very knowledgeable on the Corgi and be suited to the needs of this breed. He is a moderately active dog and is nicely sated with a couple good walks a day and some yard play. But, he does need these walks and play time daily as he is a young herding breed. We want Thorin to live his best Corgi life so his forever family must be able to manage the needs of his breed and be invested in training as Thorin needs to have his brain worked as well as getting his physical needs met. He has been to the vet and gotten all his medical needs taken care of and is a healthy dog. His people just need to be kind and caring and fully understand that he needs to be introduced to new things gently so that he can grow in confidence and not be scared or overwhelmed. He is a brave boy at heart but just nervous about new things to start. Corgi’s are a fabulous dog for the right person/family and we are looking for that perfect fit. We know that they are adorable, especially with their stubby legs, little fluffy Corgi bums and the way they sploot on the floor legs out behind them, but we also need to take into account that they are a highly intelligent herding breed so they need to work. If you know that Corgi’s are the breed for you and your lifestyle tell us why in the adoption application! We want to hear from you!
