Story
Hi, I’m Walter  🐶 Once upon a time, the wonderful team at H2H saved me from the euthanasia list in Kansas—and now I’m living my second-chance fairy tale! ✨ I’m a 9-month-old Rottie mix with a big heart, soft eyes, and the silliest happy wiggles. When I arrived, I was a little underweight, but thanks to all of my amazing foster parents (and my legendary love of food 🐷), I’m working on putting on some weight. Meal time is my FAVORITE time—I do a happy dance every time I see the bowl! ✔️Potty Training going very well ✔️Knows sit and down for food ✔️LOVES walks, does amazingly well on leash ✔️Sleeps through the night Speaking of cuddles… I am a professional snuggler. My favorite place in the world is right next to my people. I follow them everywhere like their tiny shadow and love curling up with them on the couch or in bed. I love my foster dog sibling. I pretty much ignore my foster cat siblings but they ignore me too. ☺️ I’m a total love bug who gives kisses freely, whether you’re human or canine 😘. My dream is to find a furever family who will let me soak them in love, snuggles, and puppy kisses every single day. If you’re ready for a loyal best friend with a heart full of love, I just might be your guy. Apply to meet me—Walter 🤎🐾

CHOOSE RUFUS, and adopt a dog whose life you will have truly SAVED! A dog you’ll be giving a happy forever life (after he initially didn’t make it on the transport truck to safety and we thought we were too late to save him from euthanasia at the kill shelter). A dog you’ll have the absolute privilege of showing that he is safe and that all humans aren’t mean or scary. A dog we suspect is ready to blossom into a ride-or-die, bff companion who will add so much joy, laughter, and loyalty to your household. Some great things about Rufus: —Young adult (1-2 yo), about 60-65 lbs. —Takes 90% of his cues from doggy housemates and builds confidence watching them and following their lead. Likes to play and stays near dog friends. For this reason, Rufus needs to go to a home where he’ll have a confident, playful, balanced doggy sibling. —Unbothered by cats —Potty trained! (no accidents in his foster home when taken out regularly, and he keeps a clean crate when crated) —Crates just fine during the day while you’re at work —Sleeps on floor or padded bench in the bedroom at night (does not need to be crated at night) —No food or treat aggression observed by his foster family —Once he warms up and feels comfortable, he takes treats gently and enjoys connecting through food —Is learning to accept, seek out, and reciprocate gestures of affection —BEST EYEBROWS IN THE TRI-STATE AREA. So expressive and comical; every tiny wiggle and waggle conveys so much! —We have a DNA test out; our guess is maybe Rottie, Husky, and/or GSD? We’ll update his profile when results come back. —Not a huge barker Rufus is working on: —Being led on a leash or harness. We think he had a bad experience at some point. While he works with his adopter to build his skills in this area, a fenced yard to play in is a lovely alternative to leashed walks. He enjoys frolicking and playing with foster siblings. —Feeling safe and confident with humans. He doesn’t have a mean bone in his body, but at some point, we think he had some not great experiences with some humans. He does well with kids who are respectful of his needs and cues. He is curious and wants to connect and trust. He’s making great strides and will continue to blossom with his forever family! —Helping himself to food items left on the table. On the plus side, he relinquishes it with no issue and listens when told to get down or leave something alone. Rufus deserves ALLLLLL the good things: safety, love, trust, comfort, and a permanent place in a family. Yes, he is shy and uncertain at first—but he wants to connect so, so much, and watching him come out of his shell and start to trust is SO rewarding! Choose Rufus and be the person who gives him human and canine family members he’s waited so long to find.

Story
Meet Roxie — a gentle soul looking for her happy ending. Roxie hasn’t had the easiest start. She was sadly abandoned in Springfield by the family she once trusted, left unsure of what her future would hold. Thankfully, a kind-hearted Good Samaritan stepped in to help her and had her tested for heartworms before she came into our care. The news wasn’t what anyone hoped for — Roxie tested positive. We immediately began treatment, but sweet Roxie’s luck took another tough turn. She developed an extremely rare reaction to the medication, which triggered the early stages of kidney disease. Even through all of this, Roxie has remained one of the most loving, people-focused dogs we’ve ever met. What Roxie wants more than anything is a home where she can finally feel safe, loved, and included. She adores children and would be thrilled to have some kiddos to dote on. She does ask for a home without other dogs — not because she’s difficult, but because she’s easily stressed and deserves a peaceful environment where she can truly relax. Roxie will need to stay on kidney-supportive food for the rest of her life, and her heartworm treatment will continue at a slower, gentler pace to protect her kidneys as much as possible. She doesn’t mind — as long as she has a family by her side. If you’re looking for a loyal, affectionate companion who has weathered life’s storms and still has so much love to give, Roxie is ready to meet you. She’s been through more than any dog should, but with the right family, her brightest days are still ahead. Roxie is ready for her second chance. Could it be with you?
