A COMPLETED APPLICATION IS REQUIRED BEFORE ANY CONVERSATION ABOUT ADOPTING FROM OUR ORGANIZATION.  PLEASE GO TO www.colliesheltierescue.org AND READ ABOUT THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS (GOOD PHONE INTERVIEW, SECURELY FENCED YARD, FABULOUS REFERENCE FROM YOUR VETERINARIAN AND HOME VISIT.  I KNOW THAT SEEMS LIKE A LOT BUT WE SCREEN VERY CAREFULLY OF THE SAKE OF THE DOGS.  THEY DESERVE IT! Thor is the name of this handsome gent.  He is a 36#, 2 year old neutered male tricolor Sheltie.  He is not fat.  He is a big Sheltie bred by folks who did not adhere to the breed standard.  Sometimes the bigger Shelties have bigger brains.  (oops, I said that out loud).  And Thor is very smart.  He learns quickly and retains the knowledge.  BUT, he was not socialized early enough in his previous life.  And he is very pushy.  He needs to have adopters who are at least as smart as he is. Thor's health is excellent.  He has been neutered recently.  His baseline bloodwork is great.  He is heartworm negative.  All of his vaccines are up to date.  His structure is good and strong.  But the most important thing to remember about Thor is that he is a DOMINANT DOG.  With his own people, he is sweet and loving. But, strangers are a whole different thing.  He will need a dedicated mom and/or dad to patiently teach him that most humans are nice and kind and may have treats in their pockets.  Lack of early socialization shows up in adult dogs and becomes a challenge to them their whole lives.  Thor's foster family is striving to redirect his energy when he is frightened by new people in new situations.  We would recommend a good trainer that only uses positive reinforcement techniques.  This guy is very food motivated so that should help. This is NOT a dog for a first time dog owner.  His forever folks need to have good dog skills and be aware of humans and other dogs that are nearby.  So far, Thor has been fine with female dogs but not other male dogs.  He might prefer to be an only dog although he does love to run and play and roughhouse with a female Collie in his foster home and a little tiny female Sheltie too.  He is a sofa dog and loves to cuddle, especially in the evening, to watch a little TV.  Adores toys and actually plays with a ball and brings it back.  NO KIDS PLEASE.  NO KIDS OR GRANDKIDS.  With Thor's issues with strangers, we don't know that he would ever be safe with kids. Rocky Mountain Collie and Sheltie Rescue always puts pooches first.  We love the folks that adopt from us.  But the needs of the dogs must always come first.  Thor has not had the greatest life up until now.  But the rest of his life will be the best of his life.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.February 14, 2026, 6:29 pm

This little Sheltie friend was named Thistle in a local shelter.  Thistle is approximately 7-8 years old, a neutered male and UTD on all vaccines.  He is basically a shy little fellow, although he does warm up, especially to women.  He needs a dental but we need to wait for a month or two since he just had a general anesthetic for his neuter.  But he needs the dental cleaning, with extractions to be sure, and we cover all the expenses.   Shelties are shy by nature, as I bet you already know.  All five of the Shelties from this latest hoarder confiscation lacked early socialization.  That is evident.  Four of the five Shelties are young adults and coming around quickly.  Thistle will take more time and patience.  He is eating well now with some yummies in his bowl on top of the kibble.  He drinks appropriately and is peeing and pooping outside in a kennel since he has not got the hang of walking on a leash yet.  But today, he sat in the warm sunshine with his favorite volunteer, with his head on her lap.  I thought he might begin to purr. Sheltie experience is critical for the successful placement of Thistle.  Adults who are home most of the time would be great also.  Companionable adult dogs to show him the ways of the force and where to go potty.  School age children might be too noisy and disruptive for this senior gentleman's wishes.  Have questions?  We have answers.
